One Big Bite
The first thing they do in rehab is con you. The dietician had me write down a list of my 'fear foods'. I wrote, of course: banana, chocolate, peanut butter, potato chips.
Over the course of my treatment, they presented me with these foods to eat. I felt betrayed.
On one 'Challenge food Wednesday ' (never forget), I was presented with a single potato chip. Another girl was, too. She must have written that one down on the evil intake form.
We both refused to eat it. They separated us: each of us in two different rooms. I think they thought we were negatively influencing each other in the same room.
I finally ate the potato chip, after coaching from the dietician. Later, the other girl said she only ate hers when she heard I'd eaten mine.
In this small step towards recovery, I learned that we need each other to survive.
One small bite of potato chip, one big bite out of illness.
