Never Too Late For Popsicles
- This story was initially submitted to the Prose Challenge “Write Ugly” (https://theprose.com/post/380974/never-too-late-for-popsicles)
This story was inspired by the Reedsy.com prompt “Write a story that begins with someone’s popsicle melting.”
*There was a man named Hugh from another world, who came to the Earth to defeat evil. He created a network of heroes all over the Earth, bound by crime fighting technology. This is a story of one of those heroes*
Today I started my day at a park, and I bought 50 other people popsicles. We were enjoying our popsicles when we felt a whoosh, and all of a sudden all of our popsicles had melted. I looked up and saw a floating man with red body armor and an orange helmet. A menacing voice generated from the orange helmet.
“Jirk! You took my joy from me when I was little! Now I am going to hurt everyone here! All of the pain here will be due to the pain you inflicted on me as a child!”
Looks like we need to get some backstory in for context. As you probably guessed, my name is Jirk. When I was a kid I would pick on others just for fun. I was always very strong, and I loved tormenting those that were weaker than me. I can’t count how many kids I stuffed in lockers, kids I stole lunches from, kids I hit for no reason, kids I threw food at - I could unfortunately do this all day. When I turned 17 I was walking home from a convenience store run, when I noticed a lanky, nervous looking fellow about to walk past me. He was eating a hot dog.
“This could be fun.” I thought. “Hey man, is that a grounded hot dog?” I asked.
“What is a grounded hot dog?” The awkward guy stammered.
“LET ME SHOW YOU!” I yelled, gleefully charging at him, ready to send him and his snack flying. Before I could reach him, he stepped aside, and I tripped and landed on the sidewalk. I looked his way and a dark helmet appeared in his hand. Awkward guy put on the helmet, and then he was fully covered in body armor. A confident voice came from the dark helmet.
“So what is a grounded hot dog again? Not going to show me after all?”
I was speechless, which was out of character for me. I was usually quick to hurl out an insult, but this time, I had nothing.
“You have been bullying others, and finding a sick joy from it. Should I show you how it feels? I am far stronger than you, would you like to see how it feels to be weak and tormented?”
I braced myself for what was next. I no doubt deserved what I was going to get, but what happened next surprised me.
The armored figure reached out a hand to me. I accepted the hand and stood up.
“You don’t have to live this way anymore Jirk. I can show you a better way to use your strength. I can even make you stronger.”
“How do you know my name?” I asked, a bit taken back.
“I have been watching you. We could use you in our network. With your natural abilities, you could help make this world better through heroics, instead of making it worse through bullying.”
I felt overwhelmed. I could have been beaten to a pulp, but this non-awkward guy was showing me mercy. I was inspired by his kindness, and I suddenly wanted to be just like him. So since this is supposed to be a short story, I will make a long story short. He ultimately gave me the same kind of armor generating helmet, which generated the same kind of body armor in my size. He trained me to join their ranks, and I abandoned my bullying. Now I am in my 30s, I help others that are being bullied, and I teach anyone that will listen that there is a better way to live.
Back to the current situation, I looked up at the menacing orange helmet guy floating in the air. So apparently this guy was a victim from my past. What did I do to him? Did I create this foe from my mistakes?
“What do you want?” I called out, surveying the crowd and our melted popsicles. “I will take responsibility for whatever I may have done to you. But leave these people out of it. Don’t be the monster I once was.”
“Too late!” Orange Helmet guy said. “I am this way because of what you did to me! You ran up to me when I was 8 years old, and you knocked my popsicle out of my hand! You laughed in my face, then ran away!”
I shivered at this revelation. I don’t remember all of my sins, but I definitely remember this one. I have been doing hero work for the past 15 years to atone for my past, but unfortunately there was damage I left from that life. Maybe I can change this life I ruined?
“I melted popsicles with this device!” Orange Helmet said, holding a remote in his right hand. “Now let’s see what melts when I dial this up and use more power!”
“NO, DON’T!” I shrieked, putting on my dark helmet and gaining my armor. I had to stop this guy from doing any more damage, not just to popsicles or people, but to his own life. He was going to make a move that would only hurt himself in the end. My helmet and armor also hold weapons, and I can summon things like a laser gun, a sword that can become a laser sword, even a couple of grenades. Pulling a weapon might aggravate this situation though. I decided to try something else. I lept up at him and wrapped my arms around him. Locked in a bear hug, he wasn’t going to be able to effectively use the remote. We both drifted down to the ground.
“I did some horrible things to others, including you.” I told the man. “I wish I could take them all back and undo all the damage I did, but I can’t change the past. I can only do things differently now. Tell me, have you hurt anyone else with your tech you have here?”
“No, this was my very first scheme.” Orange Helmet said. “I never forgot your face, and heard of your heroics. I spent years planning this, and I wanted to take you down in a similar way that you took down my popsicle. I was going to hurt these people, and you. I would have been no different than you were. But you stopped your wicked deeds. I want to stop mine before it is too late.”
I let him go, hoping he wasn’t going to pull a fast one on me. Orange Helmet dropped his remote and crushed it with his foot. He then took off his helmet and dropped it to the ground.
“Thank you.” I told him. “And I’m sorry. I can’t change what I did back then. And this won’t change that either. But could I perhaps buy you a new popsicle?”
The man smiled. “Only if I can buy one for all these people here.”
“Deal!” I told him, shaking his hand. And as the cold melted from one heart, we all enjoyed popsicles after that. And none of them melted. It is never too late to change, or enjoy a popsicle....
Hallway of Peril
-This story was initially submitted under the Prose Challenge "Be Warned" (https://theprose.com/post/383782/hallway-of-peril)
This story is also inspired by the Reedsy.com prompt “write about a contest with life or death stakes.”
*There was a man named Hugh from another world, who came to the Earth to defeat evil. He created a network of heroes all over the Earth, bound by crime fighting technology. This is a story of two of those heroes*
Mirk stood before the abandoned warehouse, mentally preparing himself for the challenge he was about to face. He and his brother Tam worked for a worldwide organization of heroes ran by a man named Hugh, and they were united by special dark helmets that granted their wearers armor, enhanced strength, and weapons that could be summoned by a thought. Tam had been previously sent on a mission to capture a trap loving criminal named Hall, and he had chased Hall to this very warehouse. Two days had past and Tam had not contacted Hugh or Mirk. Mirk requested the opportunity to search for Tam and also apprehend Hall if possible, and Hugh granted the request. Mirk chose to bring flash grenades, a laser gun, and an additional laser gun that wasn’t a weapon, but a tool to transport people back to their base. This tool should be helpful in extracting Tam and Hall. The only catch was it was a new creation, and it only had three shots. So Mirk would have to make the shots count to succeed and get out of this one safely.
Mirk slipped into the warehouse through one of the windows and began walking around. He checked the whole warehouse and found nothing except for another door that he assumed would lead back outside behind the warehouse. Not wanting to leave anything unchecked, Mirk opened the door and was shocked at what he saw. Instead of leading outside, a long hallway stretched beyond the door. Realizing he had much more to check, he headed through the door and began navigating the hallway. He then heard a sinister voice echoing through the long hallway.
“Welcome friend, the game has just begun!” The voice said. “My name is Hall, and you have entered my procedurally generated Hallway of Peril! If you want to find your brother, you will have to survive the challenges of this hallway! Time to choose your game mode! Easy, Normal, or Hard?”
Mirk shook his head. Now he understood why his brother hadn’t returned yet. He had been briefed on Hall being a trap expert, but he didn’t know the extent of how Hall’s traps worked. Mirk thought it over and made his choice of difficulty.
“Easy mode!” Mirk shouted. “I just want an easy going adventure before I take you down!”
“Ha ha ha ha, I like you already!” Hall jeered. “Very well, Easy mode it is! Good luck brave adventurer!”
Mirk rolled his eyes under his helmet and proceeded. The hallway was pretty bare with basic hardwood floors, tan walls and a white ceiling. Mirk wasn’t impressed with Hall’s creativity so far. Before he could get too underwhelmed, he heard something coming down the hall. Something big.
A giant orc was racing towards Mirk, with a spiked club in hand. What looked like little laser balls were coming out of the spikes, as if they were charging up for a blast. Mirk thought about his flash grenades and one appeared in his hand. He threw the grenade in front of him and it exploded, temporarily blinding the orc. Mirk raced paced the orc and found the hallway ahead was now colored dark blue on the walls, floor and ceiling.
Mirk looked around this new stretch of the hallway for any possible traps. He noticed several tiles on the floor that were a light blue. Not wanting to set off anything, Mirk stepped over the tiles as he continued to walk down the hall. A piece of the wall flew off in front of him, with gushing water coming out of the hole. More pieces of the wall came flying off, and more water began filling the hallway.
“Too bad, you should have stepped on the tiles!” Hall said, laughing at Mirk. “The hallway will soon be flooded, and you will be sent backwards! And you were so close to reaching my location!”
Mirk cursed under his breath as the current from the now flooded hallway sent him backwards. Before he knew it he was going down a waterfall, which deposited him into a big Olympic sized pool. Mirk climbed out of the pool and looked around, seeing three doors in front of him.
“One of these doors will take you to your brother, the other two have challenges behind them!” Hall said in an enthusimastic, sinister voice. “Which one will you pick?”
Mirk walked to the middle door and went in. He found himself in a dark room. Before he could figure out if he had picked the right one, he felt a whoosh near his head. He ducked in time, and his eyes adjusted to reveal the orc in front of him. The orc roared and swung his club at Mirk. No lasers seemed to be forming around the club at this moment. Mirk summoned his laser gun by thought, and fired a clean shot at the orc’s head. The orc appeared unimpressed by the blast, and it responded by roaring and raising its club. Lasers began firing from the spikes of the club, and Mirk dove towards the only spot that the lasers weren’t striking. Realizing he had no weapons that could take down the orc, Mirk quickly looked around the room for an exit. He found another door behind the orc. Mirk thought about his flash grenades and another one appeared in his hand. He threw his grenade and blinded the orc once more. Mirk raced to the door, praying that it was unlocked. He breathed a sigh of relief as the door opened, and he raced through it quickly.
Mirk found himself back in the room with the pool, and observed the three doors again. He made a mental note not to use the middle door.
“Good luck with your second try!” Hall mocked. “Just so you know, one of these doors leads to a bottomless pit!”
“Wonderful.” Mirk thought to himself. He had already picked the wrong door once, and couldn’t afford to do so again. Of course, there was no guarantee that any of the doors would lead to his brother. Realizing he didn’t have a choice, Mirk chose the door all the way to the left and proceeded in.
As soon as Mirk stepped in, the floor beneath him gave way and he was now falling. And falling. And falling. Mirk felt despair as the falling continued, thinking about the bleakness of falling endlessly before death mercifully ended this sensation. Fortunately for Mirk, this wasn’t the case. He landed in another pool, and climbed out to find only one door in front of him. Feeling a new sense of hope, Mirk raced through the door hoping to find his brother behind it.
Mirk was thrilled at what he found. His brother was there, still wearing his dark helmet and body armor. Even better, a figure with silver hair and an aged face, sporting a long red cloak lay on the floor, unconscious and tied up. Mirk knew right away that this was Hall, and his brother had been able to take him down.
“Sorry brother.” Tam said. “I survived Hall’s traps and was able to restrain him, but there was no way that I could carry him out of here and face those traps at the same time.”
“Well good thing I was always the prepared one.” Mirk replied, laughing. “I have some new tech from Hugh, and it will send you back to base. There are two additional shots, so I’ll send our foe back to be delivered to the proper authorities. Hugh is still working on that alternate dimension for criminal rehabilitation, but it isn’t completed yet, so we’ll have to do things this way.”
“Fair enough.” Tam said. “Send him first before he comes to.”
“No, my main goal was to rescue you.” Mirk answered. “Don’t worry, I survived his traps too, I’ve got this.” Mirk drew the transportation laser gun and fired a blast at Tam, sending him home.
“And now for you.” Mirk said, pulling the trigger to send the restrained Hall back to their base. But as Mirk fired the gun, he felt a kick to his leg, making him fall and miss Hall completely. Mirk quickly stood back up, horrified at what had just occured.
“Ha ha ha ha, too bad!” Hall laughed, still on the ground restrained, yet triumphant. “I only pretended to be unconscious - thanks for revealing your blast count! Now you only have one shot left for transporting! You can use it and send yourself home of course, but that will leave me free to create more hallways of peril! You could instead send me tied up to your base by using that gun, but if you do then you will have to go through a new version of my hallway to get back. You could simply just kill me and save yourself, but can you really do that Mr. Hero?”
“I am a hero, and I always will be!” Mirk responded, following his answer by punching Hall in the face, knocking him out for real. Mirk then fired his last transportation shot at Hall, sending the unconscious villain back to the base. It was going to be a journey to get back home, but Mirk felt comfort in knowing that he had saved his brother and stopped Hall’s machinations against anyone else besides himself. Now the only objective left was to get through what would hopefully be Hall’s final set of traps ever created. Mirk went back in through the door from before and heard a familiar voice.
“Greetings, and welcome to the New Game+ of my Hallway of Peril!” Hall’s echoing voice exclaimed. “Your default difficulty this time is Hard mode. Let’s see what you are truly made of brave adventurer!”
Mirk looked down the hall, and noticed that it was wider this time. Blocking the path ahead were five orcs, each holding spiked clubs with laser balls charging from the spikes on each one. Mirk mentally thought about how many flash grenades he had left, and summoned the last two in his hands. Mirk then ran down the hall towards the orcs, vowing to himself that he would get home somehow, someway....
Redemption In Another Dimension
-This story was initially submitted to the Prose challenge “I will set your house on fire” (https://theprose.com/post/382631/redemption-in-another-dimension)
This story is inspired by the Reedsy.com prompt “Write about a character arriving in a place unlike anywhere they’ve ever been.”
*****
*There was a man named Hugh from another world, who came to the Earth to defeat evil. He created a network of heroes all over the Earth, bound by crime fighting technology. This story begins with a hero named Jirk, doing battle in a ruined city. However, the focus will not remain on our hero....*
Jirk stood in the destroyed city facing his foe, grateful for the hero network he was a part of. Not only was the network able to provide him backup that evacuated the civilians in time, but the network also equipped him with a special dark helmet that provided his body with full armor, enhanced strength, and access to various weapons within a quick thought. He was going to need this technology at his disposal, since his foe had quite the powers.
Jirk’s adversary was a muscular man that was slightly bigger than himself. The villain had no armor, but he was dressed in a muscle shirt and jeans. He went by the name Nostrel. Nostrel had powers that were definitely odd, but dangerous all the same. Nostrel had the ability to fire destructive lasers out of his nostrils. He could also pull his ears off of his head and throw them, and the force of his ears hitting something was the equivalent of striking something with a wrecking ball. These destructive ears would also fly back to Nostrel’s head on command. Lastly, Nostrel could make T-Shirts sprout out of any terrain by thought. He seemed to like binding buildings in T-Shirts and lighting them ablaze with his nostril lasers.
Jirk didn’t know Nostrel’s backstory - he and his team were simply responding to a distress call. They were advised that Nostrel had destroyed a pharmaceutical building in the city. Somehow the building was cleared of people before it was destroyed. The remaining citizens in the city were all evacuated by Jirk’s colleagues upon arrival. Once Nostrel and Jirk were the last two in the city, Nostrel became very destructive, trashing the rest of the city with his powers. Jirk thought about how Nostrel had to be taken out of the picture before he started targeting lives next. Fortunately, Jirk had a method to remove Nostrel, and lethal force would not be necessary. A new tool had been developed by the hero network’s founder, Hugh. It was a special laser gun whose blast would transport the target to an alternate prison dimension created by Hugh. The dimension had limitless room for dangerous criminals, and even had a rehabilitation option available. Jirk felt this would be the best place for Nostrel to go, but he had to get a clear shot first. The gun needed for transfer was new technology, and at this point it would need 24 hours to reload after being fired. He had to make his shot count.
Jirk dashed towards Nostrel, dodging T-Shirts that formed around him in an effort to avoid being ensnared. One ear flew at him, then the second one followed shortly afterwards. Fortunately neither ear hit him. After dodging the ears that flew back to their owner, nostril lasers were the next obstacle, but Jirk dove and slid under them like he was trying to score a run in baseball. Nostrel seemed surprised by this, as the slide maneuver put Jirk right in front of the villain. Still on the ground, Jirk pointed the gun upward and took a direct shot at Nostrel’s head. The blast resulted in Nostrel’s body disintegrating, but Nostrel’s story was not over. He had simply been transported to a new world.
*****
Nostrel woke up and found himself in a field. He looked up at the starry sky, then looked in every direction for anything that could help him figure out where he could be. The field seemed to go on forever. Where was he?
A figure then appeared before him. The figure had a silver helmet and yellow armor. The figure’s look was similar to Jirk’s, except for the brightly colored armor.
“Greetings.” Said the figure in a distorted, but kind voice. “You can call me Guide.”
“Guide?” Nostrel replied. “That’s a strange name.”
“Any stranger than Nostrel?” Guide responded.
“Seriously man?” Nostrel retorted, feeling slightly offended. “Wait, how do you know my name?”
“I know everything about you.” Guide said. “I am an artificial intelligence that was designed for this dimension.”
“This dimension?” Nostrel asked, feeling confused. “Where are we?”
“This is the Reflection Dimension.” Guide answered. “It was created by a man named Hugh, through scientific means from another planet.”
“The Reflection Dimension?” Nostrel asked, seeking answers.
“Yes.” Guide replied. “This world was created as an alternate to prisons. This field stretches forever, and you won’t run into any other residents that were sent here. Any food, shelter, digital entertainment, or lodgings needed I can bring you by request.”
“How long do I have to stay here?” Nostrel asked.
“You are here forever unless you pass a test.” Guide replied. “The test will determine if you have changed for the better. If you pass, you are free to go back to Earth with no further sentence. Hugh cleared this method of rehabilitation with world leaders.”
Nostrel paused for a moment, then decided in his head that this wasn’t a bad break. He could pretend to regret what he had done, fake his way through whatever the test was, then return home and payback those that hurt him.
“Alright Mr. Guide, I am ready to change.” Nostrel said in the most confident voice he could muster. “Let’s take this test right now.”
“Are you sure?” Guide asked. “Have you had enough time to reflect?”
“I have had enough time.” Nostrel replied. “Let’s do this.”
*****
Guide caused a portal to open, and Nostrel went in. Suddenly Nostrel found himself in a familiar place. He was in the pharmaceutical building he had previously destroyed. The building was still intact, besides the damage he had caused to get to the company CEO’s office. He found himself reliving the situation that had started the battle in the city.
“Now now Mr. Nostrel, you signed the agreement that we could not be held accountable for any side effects from the ears, nose and throat medicine you were doing the clinical trial for.” The CEO said. “We are shocked that our product caused you to have destructive ears, nostril lasers, and T-Shirt creation abilities. But we were in agreement that any side effects can not be held against us.”
“THEN I’LL HOLD THEM AGAINST YOU BY DESTROYING YOUR BUILDING!” Nostrel screamed. “YOU MIGHT WANT TO EVACUATE YOUR BUILDING, UNLESS YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYEES EITHER!”
And with that the CEO ran out of the room, and within moments announcements calling for evacuation were sounding throughout the building. Once Nostrel was certain the building was clear he used his new powers and leveled the building. He then observed a group of figures with dark helmets and full body armor before him.
“We will get the civilians out of here!” One of the figures exclaimed. “Are you up for taking down the threat?”
“Yes, thank you.” Said the figure whose name wasn’t stated, but you the reader would know him as Jirk.
“Yes, get all the people out.” Nostrel said snidely. “Then I will take you on.”
This was taking place just like the actual battle had prior to being sent to the Reflection Dimension. Nostrel assumed that his challenge was a rematch simulation, and his goal was to win the fight this time. Once it was confirmed that all the civilians were safely evacuated, the battle began. There was a caveat though.
Nostrel was fighting the same fight as before. However, his powers were suddenly gone. He could no longer bind buildings with T-Shirts. He could not blast lasers out of his nose. And his ears could no longer be used as powerful projectiles. The powers he had gained from the clinical trial were gone. And that wasn’t the worst of it. Jirk was growing. Nostrel found himself looking up at a giant Jirk. And he was powerless to do anything. Frozen in fear, the last thing Nostrel observed was a giant foot crushing him.
*****
When Nostrel came to, he found himself back in the field again. He saw Guide standing before him too.
“OKAY, WHAT KIND OF CHALLENGE WAS THAT?” Nostrel asked angrily. “THERE WAS NO WAY TO WIN THAT!”
“Yes, before your challenge began the condition of your heart and mind were examined, and this directly affected your challenge.” Guide replied. “One who enters a challenge here without truly changing their ways will never win. The darker your intentions, the harder your challenge will be.”
This revelation hit Nostrel harder than Jirk’s giant foot in the challenge. He realized that he wouldn’t be leaving if he kept his desire for revenge. But he still felt so angry for what had happened from the clinical trial. He wondered if he really could change.
“May I discuss this with you?” Guide asked. “Honestly, I think you are further ahead than you think. Yes, you did a lot of wrong by destroying the city and attacking the hero sent to stop you. However, you did not attempt to hurt any other civilians, including those that worked for the pharmaceutical company. You can be opposed to the pharmaceutical company and what their clinical trial did to you, but violence and destruction won’t help.”
“You aren’t wrong, but I need some time to process this.” Nostrel said, calming down. “I would like to stay here a while and think through what I should do next.”
“That is absolutely fine.” Guide said kindly. “I can provide you with whatever you need.”
*****
Nostrel lived off of the resources of the Reflection Dimension for a year and a half, and in that time he made a decision on what to do should he return home. He would publicly announce where his powers came from, and he would admit to his mistakes in attacking the city and the hero trying to protect it. He would then work on making amends, using his powers for good. Maybe he could even join the organization Hugh created.
“Guide, I am ready to try the challenge again.” Nostrel said. “And this time, I think I am ready.”
“Very well.” Guide replied. “I congratulate you on your new outlook, and I wish you the best.”
Guide opened a portal and Nostrel walked in. He found himself back in the CEO’s office. The CEO once again distanced himself and his company from taking any responsibility for the effects of the clinical trial. Nostrel found his anger flaring up, but this time he stopped himself from giving in.
“I want to destroy this building and take down your company for what you’ve done to me, but further violence isn’t the answer.” Nostrel said. “You can bill me for the damages I caused to get in here, but I will be telling people about what your products do, and what you don’t do to help your victims.” Nostrel then walked away from the CEO and proceeded out of the building. Once he was on the street he saw a flash of white light. Soon the white light was all he could see.
*****
The white light eventually faded, and Nostrel found himself back in the city he had destroyed. Before him stood the hero known as Jirk.
“Cool, you’re back!” Jirk said excitedly. “It appears that you passed the test in the Reflection Dimension. I am not sure how long you were there, but it has only been a few minutes since I sent you.”
“Only a few minutes?” Nostrel asked. “I have been gone much longer, but that was time I needed. I apologize for destroying this city, and I apologize for attacking you. I am not happy about what has happened to me, but I would like to make the most of it. I will start by working to rebuild the damages I have caused.”
“Sounds great!” Jirk said enthusiastically. “My team and I can help you with that. And my boss Hugh has connections with reliable pharmaceutical companies. They could begin working on a cure for you if you’d like.”
“I may take you up on that, but I would like to see how I can use these abilities for good first.” Nostrel replied. “I don’t suppose your boss is hiring?”
“Always!” Jirk said, smiling under his helmet. “Let’s go talk to him together. He will be thrilled that the dimension he created has helped you and anyone else that the new you will help in the future.”
Nostrel smiled and shook Jirk’s hand. He looked forward to repenting for his mistakes, and he looked forward to the adventures that were sure to come as a result of the changes he would make in his life....
The Pit
-This story was initially submitted under the Prose Challenge "Any Old Thing" (https://theprose.com/post/389825/the-pit)
*I originally had this story published in my high school’s literary magazine back in my 1997-1998 school year. I left the errors and rough around the edges writing intact. I started actively writing again in April, and I have written a few short stories where the protagonist of this story has grown up and formed a global organization of heroes. At some point I may rewrite this story or rework it into an expanded follow up, but for now here is the original*
My name is Hugh. I am from a planet similar to Earth. I am a crime fighter. I left my old planet to come to Earth because I had helped to completely cleanse my home planet from evil, and I wanted to help do the same thing for Earth. I have superpowers from machinery. I have a dark helmet that covers my head and when I wear it, my body is fully armored and I have access to a bunch of different weapons. If I want to use a certain weapon, I just have to think about it, and the weapon will appear in my hand. If I don’t need the weapon anymore, it will just disappear when I think about it. Some weapons I have are a laser gun, a sword that lights up into a laser sword when I want it to, and a grenade. I am sixteen years old. This is what my latest mission is about:
I am after one of the earth’s most wanted thugs. He is a dangerous psycho killer named Gull. He has armor and weapons much like mine. He has killed tons of people and he has stolen tons of money. Right now I am in New York City chasing him down the crowded streets. He has just entered a deserted building that is in great need of repairs. I follow him in. I shut the door behind me and I look around. The walls are crumbling and the floor has holes in it. The building is really dirty. I walk into another room and I see Gull, standing there, unarmed. I let my laser gun appear in my hand and I aim it at him. “Put your hands up!” I yell. The fool doesn’t listen.
“There is something very special about this building.” he says.
“Okay, what?” I ask, feeling confused.
“I heard there is a bottomless pit in this building.” he says, confidently. He steps back a little, and I walk forward, when suddenly, the floor beneath me gives way, and before I am plunged into darkness, I see Gull, and I know underneath his helmet he is smiling triumphantly.
Now I’m falling down in a pit, and it could possibly be bottomless. It is totally dark. I fall onto a hard, dirty floor. I am in a dark corridor, and I can see around myself. I still have my laser gun in my hand, and I am prepared for anything. Just then I notice an armored figure heading my way. I shout a greeting, hoping he will be friendly, but when a laser shot is his response, I get the idea that he isn’t. I dodge the shot and I shoot back, hitting the figure in the chest. The figure explodes. I realize it isn’t human, it’s a robot. It isn’t a very good robot either. Just then I realize my troubles are far from over. More robots are coming out, more and more, surrounding me. I fire at robots all around me, jumping to dodge their fire. When there is a clear path, I run through, chased by robots. I then notice a trapdoor. I fire at robots coming toward me, dodge their fire, and open the trapdoor; I see some stairs. I begin to head down the stairs and I shut the trapdoor so I won’t be followed. It is now pitch black, and I feel my way around as I go down the stairs. Just then the stairs turn into a ramp, and I go sliding down. I soon slide into a chamber that is lit up. I look behind me and, where the chamber was, now stands a wall; there is no door. I am trapped in this chamber. That is the least of my problems: the chamber is completely filled with water, and my armor suit won’t save me from drowning. I only have a few minutes to live.
Just then I remember that I still have my laser gun in my hand. I never tried shooting it underwater, but I figure that there is always a first time for something, or in my case, a last time for something. So I fire the gun at the floor, and it works! I make a hole in the floor, and I am sucked right into the hole. I’m going down a sort of underwater slide. I have managed to get out of the water chamber, but I’m still not safe from drowning. Just then I notice a white chin-up bar ahead of me. I realize that I have one shot at this, and I reach out my hands and grab the bar. I have hold. I hold on really tightly as water flows by me. I hold on tighter, knowing that if I lose my grip I’ll go flying further down the tunnel. Eventually all the water from the chamber has flown by me, and I can finally breathe. I breathe a sigh of relief, but I realize that I am still not out of the hole, yet (no pun intended). Just then the part of the ceiling that the bar is attached to begins to move up. I hold on to the bar longer, hoping that this might be a way out. I rise upward into a tunnel. I go up and up, and finally I look to my left and I see a doorway. I realize I must be in the basement of the house that I entered when this whole thing began. I swing myself onto the basement floor, and I watch the bar that saved my life slowly move back down the tunnel that I rose from. I then wonder if Gull is still in the house. Just then I hear noise from a stairway ahead of me. I realize that someone is coming down. And I have a pretty good idea who it is.
Gull is now in the basement facing me. He is fully armored, and he is holding a sword in his hand.
“So I see you survived your little drop.” Gull says, “but now you have me to deal with.”
“I know, you don’t stand a chance.” I say heatedly, as I let my sword appear in my hand. We begin clashing swords, trying to strike each other. We fight each other for a little while, managing to go from the basement to the second floor.
“You know, this is really boring. How about a little more difficulty?” Gull says, as he lets his sword light up into a laser sword.
“Sure, why not?” I say, letting my sword light up into a laser sword. We begin clashing our laser swords. Just then we walk into the room where we originally confronted each other, and the room is full of holes. Then the floor beneath Gull gives way and he is about to fall into a pit when I grab his arm.
“Go ahead; drop me.” he says, angrily. “Kill me, it doesn’t matter. I’m nothing but a scum-ball anyway.” Instead, I let my laser sword disappear and I let my stun laser gun appear in my hand. I then shoot Gull in the head with it and I smash his helmet with my shot, destroying his armor. He is out cold, and I pull him up. I then very carefully carry him out of the house. I take him to the police station and I turn him in. I feel pretty good at this point. I have just succeeded at my first challenge on earth. I know this was only the tip of the iceberg, and I will have many more challenges ahead of me.....
The end (for now)!
Bait
This story was initially submitted under the Prose Challenge "I am a fan of weird..." (https://theprose.com/post/396052/bait)
This story is inspired by the Reedsy.com prompt “Start your story with someone robbing a bank and end it with two people driving on an interstate.”
“You really have a way to pull this off Willy?”
“Of course.” Willy replied to his nervous friend Jobe, as they stood outside a bank that was closed for the night. “We’re gonna slip in, grab whatever amount you owe that scamming loan company, and no one will be able to trace it back to us. Although, I could take care of those fishing cheats from the loan company for you instead.”
“No, I just want my obligation paid and done with!” Jobe responded. Jobe had previously visited a loan business named WeLoanMonies in a shopping plaza. He had been told that he would have five years to pay off a loan of $5,000. When Jobe went to make an installment payment one week later, he discovered that the company had left the plaza. After another week passed, Jobe began receiving death threats from the company by phone. The last caller told Jobe he would sink him in a lake where no one would ever find him. The only way to end the threats was to pay off the debt immediately at a location of the company’s choice.
“Never borrow money from shady companies!” Willy sneered. “Fortunately, my little secret will give you a new lease on life. Take my hand.”
Jobe and Willy were both dressed in black and wore black ski hats to cover their faces. Jobe took Willy’s hand and felt a strange sensation. It looked like everything was growing bigger. When the sensation ended, Jobe looked at himself and Willy, and realized they had both turned into worms. Their clothes and the duffel bags that they were carrying had disappeared.
“Relax, we can still talk to each other, and no one can hear us.” Willy calmly told his friend. “I have the power to turn into a worm, and I can turn anyone I touch into a worm too. Another touch combined with my will and we will be human again. We will transform back with our clothes on, and anything we were carrying will reappear in our hands. But first, let’s go get that money for your debt.”
Jobe and Willy spotted a crack near the bank entrance. They crawled through it and found themselves inside. They continued crawling towards a vault door, which luckily had a sizeable crack in the wall next to it. They crawled through this crack and found themselves in a room surrounded by money. Willy crawled near Jobe and bumped his head against him, turning them both into humans again.
“Man, that was weird!” Jobe exclaimed. “But I can see how you can get away with anything with this power.”
“This is how I have all the nicest stuff while working a basic customer service job.” Willy said, snickering. “Grab what you need brother.... take a little extra on the house if you want to as well.”
“No, I am only taking what I need to get WeLoanMonies out of my life!” Jobe responded. “I’m not trying to live a cushy life like you, I just want my normal life back!”
“You know, it is going to look suspicious if the bank is missing exactly $5,000, and that is what you pay those loan monsters.” Willy said. “They could trace this crime back to you, use that knowledge to demand more money, and threaten to turn you in if you don’t comply. Why don’t you take some more and not make it as obvious?”
“Fine, but I don’t want it!” Jobe replied, giving in. “You take it! I’m not looking for extra, I just want to be free from those tormentors!”
“If you insist.” Willy sneered, filling his duffel bag with cash. Once he was satisfied, Willy tapped Jobe on the shoulder.
“Take my hand again.” Willy commanded. “It’s time for us to get out of here.”
Jobe followed this instruction and the two men transformed into worms again. They slipped through the cracks from before and exited the bank before transforming back. Then they went to Jobe’s apartment.
*****
“Not bad, eh brother?” Willy said triumphantly. “We got the money to pay off your debt, and I have the money to get myself a little bonus for helping my struggling buddy! Should I get a new game system, or maybe a new car?”
“Do what you want.” Jobe said dejectedly, feeling guilty for robbing a bank. “You have helped me, but I am regretting knowing your secrets on how you have the best new stuff. I won’t sell you out, but I think we should go our separate ways.”
“If that’s what you want.” Willy replied, not sounding bothered in the least. “How about one more adventure together, for old times sake? You should have some backup when you bring those snakes that money you owe.”
“You know, for being a cheat and a thief, you have a good heart.” Jobe said, a small smile forming on his face. “Ok, this is the address they gave me to visit.”
“Let’s go, I’ll drive!” Willy replied. The two men walked to Willy’s new Cadillac. Willy put his duffel bag of money in the trunk, while Jobe held his, prepared to hand it to WeLoanMonies and gain his freedom. They drove to what looked like an abandoned warehouse that desperately needed repairs.
“What an original setting.” Willy laughed. “Here, I’ll carry the money for you. I’ll even take point.”
“Thanks Willy.” Jobe said, handing him the duffel bag. “You really are a good friend for helping me out of this mess.”
“No problem bub.” Willy responded kindly. “Alright, time for you to get your new lease on life.” Willy touched Jobe’s shoulder, transforming Jobe into a worm again.
“If I let you carry on, you are just gonna get duped again, probably by the same loan sharks.” Willy said, a twisted smile forming on his lips. “You have always been such a sniveling little worm, so you might as well live like one. We can go ahead and go our separate ways now!” Willy picked up Jobe and put him on the ground, then started walking towards the warehouse alone. Jobe screamed at Willy, begging him to transform him back, but that was the last time anyone heard Jobe speak ever again....
*****
A slightly muscular man with slicked back hair and a business suit looked at Willy disapprovingly. “I was expecting Jobe.” He said. The man was surrounded by four thugs, even more muscular than himself.
“Yeah, Jobe was being a snively little worm, so he sent me to deliver the money.” Willy said. Willy stood before these intimidating men, normally very outmatched due to being overweight and out of shape. But thanks to his ability, he had all the confidence he needed. “Here, catch!”
Willy threw the bag over the heads of the thugs and their leader, and as they turned around to see where the bag went, Willy raced forward and touched each one of them on the back. Within a moment there were five worms on the ground. Willy grabbed each worm and put them in a live bait container, then retrieved the bag.
“You fools won’t torment anyone ever again. But I have one more journey for you.”
*****
“So where are we heading for fishing this time, buddy?”
“A great new spot for catching big ones outside of the city, John.” Willy responded to his friend. As the Cadillac sped down the interstate, Willy continued talking to his fishing buddy, ignoring the pleas and screams from the worms in the container. They used to threaten to make those that couldn’t pay them sleep with the fishes, and now they were about to pay for their actions by being impaled on hooks as bait for the fishes. The only one that could help these tormentors was also a tormentor, and he was enjoying himself too much to change a thing....
Christmas Candy Criminal
This story is based on the Reedsy.com prompt "Write about a character who everyone thinks is guilty of something terrible, but isn’t."
*In this story you are the main character, and you get to decide what happens next. Be cautious with your choices, as the wrong ones will give you a bad ending. Make the right choices and you will reach the true ending!*
You are alone in the living room of your apartment, relaxing on your couch watching your favorite TV show. You are eating your favorite snack and enjoying your program, as well as the view of your holiday decorations. Your program is then interrupted by a breaking news cast.
"We interrupt this program to inform you of a horrible crime. An individual at the Food Supply Mart ran out of the store with a cart full of thousands of dollars worth of Christmas candy, without paying a cent for it...."
You muse about the sheer amount of candy that was stolen, and you think about how this criminal deserves lots of cavities for this deed. You ponder who the person is that would go to such lengths for that kind of sugar fix.
"....Security at the Food Supply Mart was able to get video footage of the crime. If you see this person, please contact the Police immediately."
The picture of the criminal pops onto the TV, and you are shocked. The picture of the perpetrator is none other than yourself. Obviously you didn't commit this crime, as you have been home this whole time. But someone has somehow used your likeness to perform this heinous act and placed the blame on you. The crime just happened and the Food Supply Mart is pretty close to your apartment. You might be able to find the true culprit if you head out now. Of course, there's a chance the Police might arrest you if you go near the scene of the crime. What will you do?
- Hide in your apartment.
- Head to the grocery store and seek out the criminal.
*If you chose to hide in your apartment*
Now that your face was on TV for a crime you didn't commit, you realize it is only a matter of time before the Police arrive. You hear sirens in the distance, and before you know it the sound is on your street. You shut your TV, lights, and holiday decorations off, then you hide under your bed. You hear your door being busted down, and you hear someone entering your apartment. The footsteps enter your room, and a flashlight shines in your face. Looks like you didn't play hide and seek enough as a kid, and it is going to be even harder to play it in prison.
*If you chose to head to the grocery store and seek out the criminal.*
You disguise yourself by dressing in black and wearing a black bandana over your face. You head to Food Supply Mart on foot, sticking to the shadows. You see several Police Cars driving by with their sirens on, turning down your street. Good thing you didn't stick around.
You arrive at the Food Supply Mart parking lot and look around. You would like to go in, but are unsure how you can do so inconspicuously. Just then you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around and see a man with a mohawk, purple eyes behind party glasses, mismatched clothes, and a toothy smile.
"Are you trying to get busted buddy?" The man asks. "You are the candy guy on the news, right? You dressed like a robber in your disguise, you might as well have put an 'Arrest Me' sign on yourself!"
You ask the strange looking man who he is, and this is his reply.
"My name is Custom Character Creator, but you can call me CCC. If you want to get in the store and find out who did this to you, I can help you. I can change your appearance for an hour. What do you say?"
This CCC guy seems to know an awful lot about your situation. He seems suspicious, but he may be your best bet for infiltrating the store. What will you do?
- Accept CCC's help and change your appearance.
- Enter the store as is and look for clues.
*If you chose to enter the store as is and look for clues.*
You decline CCC's offer and walk into the store. You take a shopping cart and pretend to be shopping as you walk around looking for clues. You walk towards the Customer Service counter to see if you can listen in on anything. You recognize the store manager and a cashier that was always rude to you. The cashier points at you and yells "That's him security - he's the thief!" You are surrounded by security, and as they take you away you notice the clerk smirking at you. It is too bad that you didn't think of a better disguise before going into the store....
*If you chose to accept CCC's help and change your appearance*
You nod to CCC, and a wide smile crosses his face. A force field like bubble surrounds you both, and CCC pulls out a laptop.
"No one will see us in this bubble - now to change your look!" CCC exclaims. He types some buttons on his laptop, and as he does this your face, hair, and body type change based on the requests you give him. Your clothes also change to a Police uniform per your request. You tell CCC that you are set, and the bubble disappears.
"I'll hang out here if you need to make any more changes, good luck on your investigation!" CCC says happily. You thank him then walk into the store. You head to the Customer Service counter to see if you can learn anything from the workers. You see the store manager and a cashier that was always rude to you standing behind the counter. You approach them and ask about the Christmas candy crime.
"Well, I never had a good interaction with that customer, I always felt that there was something off there!" The cashier said, sounding happy that you were now a wanted criminal. You have never been rude to this cashier, but the cashier has always given you an attitude for buying a lot of groceries at once. You are irritated at the cashier's glee, but you keep your composure.
"My employee has always been great, so I trust his judgement." The store manager adds. This annoys you even more! You can not fathom how a super rude cashier can be considered great, especially when all of the other cashiers in the store are wonderful. You continue to keep your cool, and think about what these two told you. You feel like the cashier may have framed you out of spite. Or maybe the store manager did the crime to keep his employee happy. CCC may have altered one of their appearances to frame you. You can pretend to arrest the manager or the cashier and see if their reaction generates more information out of either one of them. Or you could see if CCC is still outside and press him for information. What is your plan?
- "Apprehend" the store manager.
- "Apprehend" the cashier.
- Locate CCC and interrogate him.
*If you chose to "apprehend" the store manager.*
You approach the store manager and tell him he needs to come with you for questioning. You tell him that there have been reports of a person altering appearances, and he is believed to have taken advantage of this to frame the suspect.
"This is absurd!" The store manager replies. "I have never heard of such a thing! In fact, I bet you are the suspect in disguise. Show me your identification officer!"
That was the one thing you forgot to get from CCC. Your cover is blown, and the scene you have caused has received the attention of security. You picked the wrong suspect.
*If you chose to "apprehend" the cashier.*
You approach the cashier and tell him he needs to come with you for questioning. You tell him that there have been reports of a person altering appearances, and he is believed to have taken advantage of this to frame the suspect.
The cashier turns white as a sheet, and he gives you a deer in headlights look. You walk him outside and then realize you don't have a car or cuffs to bring him in with. Even if you were able to take the cashier to the Police, they would see through your disguise and you would be arrested for impersonating an officer. The cashier notices this too, and one strong right hook later leaves you on the ground, and he has escaped.
*If you chose to locate CCC and interrogate him.*
You thank the store manager and the cashier for their time and information, then you head outside to look for CCC. True to his word, he is still there. You ask him if he altered anyone's appearance to look like you.
"I may have helped a certain grumpy employee do that." CCC chuckles. "I had no idea he would do this though, I simply thought he wanted to go to the store without being asked to help out his employer while there."
You suspected the cashier was the culprit. Now the hard part - how can you prove your innocence?
As if he read your mind, CCC makes a suggestion.
"You know, you only have about 20 minutes before this disguise wears off. Why don't you go to the Police and transform back before their eyes? If they can see that there is a possibility that someone impersonated you, that might clear your name."
You ask CCC if he could come with you to the Police to back up your claim.
"Sorry, but another criminal might come by that needs a disguise!" CCC answers playfully. "You can send them my way here though, I will answer their questions!"
You doubt this, but you feel like this may be your only chance. Of course, you could very well get arrested anyway. Your hour is almost up. What will you do?
- Call the Police and transform back before their eyes.
- Go home and consider another plan.
*If you decided to go home and consider another plan.*
You don't feel confident with CCC's suggestion, so you walk home. Your transformation runs out right before you get back. The Police are waiting for you outside of the apartment, and you are quickly apprehended. You wonder if the sight of you transforming before their eyes would have changed anything, but it's too late now.
*If you chose to call the Police and transform back before their eyes.*
You have CCC change your outfit to a civilian one so the Police don't take you in for impersonating them. They are rare nowadays, but you find a payphone outside of the Food Supply Mart. You call the Police and tell them to come to your location for a development on the case. Within minutes an officer arrives. You tell them who you really are and motion to CCC, but he is apparently gone. You then explain that although he is gone, CCC altered the criminal's appearance to look like you, and your appearance was altered as a disguise while you investigated. The officer laughs at your story, but is then shocked to see you transform back into yourself before their eyes. Now having your full attention, you tell the officer about the cashier that likely framed you. The officer tells you they will have a chat with the cashier, and they will make sure you are cleared of all charges. You are not sure if they will be able to prove the cashier is the culprit without CCC as a witness, and you are even more uncertain of CCC's true motive in all of this. However, you are pretty confident that you can go back home without fear of being arrested, and you are now sure that you can enjoy your holiday where you belong.
(If you picked all the right choices, congrats)
The End
The True Naughty Listers
Nostrel sat in a small conference room at the local headquarters of his new job. He was now working for Hugh, a 30 year old man from another world that had been working to cleanse the Earth from evil since he was 16 years old (Hugh’s original adventure can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/389825/the-pit ). Once he turned 30, Hugh created a network of heroes all over the Earth, bound by crime fighting technology. Agents working for Hugh were equipped with technology that Hugh himself had used to fight evil: a special dark helmet that provided its wearer with full armor, enhanced strength, and access to various weapons with a quick thought. Due to side effects from a clinical trial for an ears, nose and throat medicine, Nostrel had powers of his own that he could likely utilize instead of Hugh’s technology. Nostrel observed the screen in the conference room light up, with none other than Hugh himself looking his way. Although he was from another planet, Hugh appeared quite human, and he didn’t look any older than 25.
“Greetings, you must be Nostrel.” Hugh said enthusiastically. “I understand you have joined us based on interactions with my associate Jirk.”
“That’s right.” Nostrel said, feeling slightly uncomfortable. Nostrel met Jirk because Jirk was sent to stop him while he was destroying the city that housed the pharmaceutical company responsible for the drug that gave him his side effect powers. Thanks to Jirk’s skills and a trip to an alternate world created by Hugh called the Reflection Dimension, Nostrel was reformed and cleared of all crimes. Nostrel’s discomfort faded when he remembered that working for Hugh was his chance to turn over a new leaf (Nostrel’s encounter with Jirk and his time in the Reflection Dimension can be read about here: https://theprose.com/post/382631/redemption-in-another-dimension ).
“As Jirk told you already, we have connections with scientists that could look into a cure for the side effects from the medicine you previously took in the clinical trial.” Hugh said. “But per your conversation with Jirk and your application, I understand you want to try your powers in the field instead of our standard issue helmets?”
“Yes please.” Nostrel replied politely. “I would like to use these powers for a better cause then destruction. If they don’t prove useful to your organization, then I could certainly take you up on looking into a cure.”
“I can appreciate that, and I am open to seeing how it goes!” Hugh said excitedly. “Get some winter clothes together Nostrel, your first assignment with us will be helping Santa in the North Pole!”
“Ha ha ha ha, that’s funny!” Nostrel laughed. He stopped laughing when he noticed Hugh’s serious expression.
“It is no joke, Saint Nick himself sent us a distress call.” Hugh responded. “Apparently, one of Santa’s most loyal and talented elves, a fellow that goes by Hilseph, has gone rogue and is trying to destroy Santa’s workshop, and the Christmas village that houses it. A small part of the village was destroyed, but the rest of the village and the workshop are currently being protected by force fields. Santa is not sure how long the force fields will hold up, and if this isn’t taken care of quickly, it could reach the media and cause panic with the children of the world.”
“I understand Hugh, and I will take care of it.” Nostrel said. “I will go in the field with my own powers, but there is one piece of tech I would like to take with me if that’s ok.”
*****
Nostrel arrived at the North Pole, and it didn’t take him long to locate the problem. A giant Santa robot was in front of Santa’s Workshop, pummeling the force field with its fists. Nostrel was still surprised that Santa used force fields, wondering how many other naughty folks attack the North Pole.
“SANTA DOESN’T APPRECIATE THE ELVES, AND HE DIDN’T LIKE THEIR SONG!” An angry voice screamed over an intercom coming from the Santa robot. “HE GAVE RUDOLPH A HARD TIME OVER HIS NOSE TOO! WELL I AM DONE BUILDING TOYS FOR HIM! I BUILT THIS ROBOT IN A DAY, AND I WILL DESTROY HIS LIFE’S WORK IN LESS THAN THAT!”
Nostrel wasn’t sure what this was all about, but he took a wild guess that Hilseph was within the towering robot. He raced over to it and began using his powers to try and take out the machine. He started with firing lasers out of his nostrils at the robot’s legs. The lasers deflected away without fail. Next Nostrel pulled off his ears and threw them at the robot. The impact from his ears would be the equivalent of being hit by a wrecking ball, but these also put no dent in the robot. Nostrel’s ears flew back to him, and he decided to try his last ability. He summoned T-Shirts from the ground in an attempt to bind the robot, and much like his first attacks, the robot was unfazed, tearing itself away from the T-Shirt binding. Nostrel regretted not utilizing more of Hugh’s tech. He had one piece of equipment from Hugh, but it would only work if Hilseph emerged from his giant Santa bot. As he listened to Hilseph hurl more accusations against Santa, he had an idea. The robot itself was impenetrable thus far, but the ground around it wasn’t. If he could knock the robot down and immobilize it, maybe he could get Hilseph to show himself....
Nostrel drew his destructive ears once more, and threw them at the ground where the Santa bot’s legs stood. Two craters formed where the ears hit, and the Santa bot lost its balance and fell backward. The robot laid on the ground on its back, and Nostrel climbed onto it and approached its head, finally firing a laser from his nostril at its face. A hole appeared where the laser hit, and Hilseph and Nostrel were finally face to face.
“You hate Santa that much that you made your Santa robot’s face vulnerable?” Nostrel asked, somewhat surprised that his gambit worked.
“YES, YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN WHAT I SAW IN THE RUDOLPH MOVIE!” Hilseph hollered, a rabid look in his eyes. “SANTA TOLD THE ELVES THAT THEIR SONG NEEDED WORK! HE TOLD RUDOLPH’S DAD THAT HE HOPED HIS RED NOSE WOULD GO AWAY! SANTA IS NOT A NICE MAN, THE MOVIE IS EVIDENCE OF THAT! I WILL RUIN HIM!”
“Dude, that was just an old movie, stop motion animated to boot!” Nostrel responded in disbelief. “It doesn’t represent reality! I thought you were one of his best elves! Would you really have been that loyal if Santa was actually like that? What is really going on?”
“STAY OUT OF MY WAY, I KNOW WHAT I SAW! THE ORC ENLIGHTENED ME! LET ME FINISH MY WORK!”
“I can’t let you do that, believe me.” Nostrel retorted. Hilseph’s statement about an Orc enlightening him gave Nostrel an idea of what was really happening. The time had come to play his ace in the hole. Nostrel drew the gun entrusted to him by Hugh, and he fired a clean laser shot at Hilseph. Hilseph disintegrated upon impact.
*****
Nostrel climbed down from the giant robot and found an audience before him of Santa, Mrs. Claus and several elves. All of them looked panicked over the laser gun in Nostrel’s hand, still smoking.
“Where is Hilseph?” Santa asked worriedly.
“Don’t worry, he’s fine.” Nostrel responded gently. “This gun transported him to the Reflection Dimension. It is an alternative to prison. Food, shelter, digital entertainment, and lodgings are provided to its residents. Residents there are also given a chance to take a test to see if they have changed, and if they have they will be sent back here. Personally, I think Hilseph was brainwashed and pit against you all, and his trip to the Reflection Dimension will remove the brainwashing. In fact, he should be reappearing right about....”
Hilseph then appeared before everyone. He no longer looked angry, just sad.
“I am so sorry!” Hilseph sobbed. “A monster kidnapped me while I was seeking new materials in the wild for toys, and he made me watch the Rudolph movie. He hypnotized me into believing that the parts where the movie version of Santa acted misguided were representative of Santa’s true nature!”
“Ho Ho Ho, no need to apologize my friend!” Santa said in a jolly tone, hugging and comforting Hilseph. “Based on Nostrel’s actions and your confirmation, none of this is your fault! And for the record, I love your elf songs! Ho Ho Ho!”
“I am glad you are back to normal.” Nostrel said kindly to Hilseph. “I want to catch who did this to you. Can you tell me more about the monster?”
“Yes, absolutely!” Hilseph quickly responded. “He was a giant goblin that called himself Hypnorc. He put me under his control in a cave not far from here. I think I remember him saying he had to be close by for his hypnotism to work. He might still be near!”
“Thank you Hilseph!” Nostrel said quickly, dashing off to search the surrounding area for Hypnorc. “Rest easy, I will catch him and stop him from doing this to anyone else!”
*****
Hypnorc sat in the seat of the airborne jet, looking out the window. Despite the goblin’s massive size, he had plenty of room in the jet. He looked out the window, and in the distance down below, he saw the one responsible for taking down the Santa robot now entering his cave. Hypnorc felt relieved that he was not currently there. He then looked straight ahead at his new acquaintance that had given him this last minute escape. His rescuer was nothing more than a featureless, dark silhouette.
“I see your plan to destroy Santa’s portion of the North Pole failed.” The silhouette figure said in a voice that could belong to nobility, but the voice also carried a sinister tone to it. “No matter though, your skills impress me. I could use someone like you for my cause.”
“I appreciate the save, but what is your cause?” Hypnorc asked.
“The end of the same organization that just foiled your plans.” The figure responded. “They are trying to make the world a better place, but if they were really doing that then I wouldn’t look like this, a literal shadow of my former self. So I want to dismantle them, and make the world a better place in our own way. I think you would be an asset to our growing network. And once Hugh and his group are gone, you can attempt your North Pole takeover again. Or better yet, aim even higher.”
“I’m game.” Hypnorc responded, an evil smile crossing his face. “Under one condition. Tell me who it is I am working for, mystery man!”
“You can call me Leftover.” The silhouette figure replied. “After Hugh’s associate failed, this was all that was left of me. But when I am done with them, there will be nothing left at all.”
The adventures of Hugh, Leftover, and their teams will continue....
The Prince’s Year End Goals! Destiny Beyond The Throne
This story is inspired by the Reedsy.com prompt "Write about someone scrambling to finish a goal in the last few hours of the year."
Christmas 2020:
Lenny Overature stood before his father on Christmas Day, bowing before the throne. His dad was the king of their home country Prosperity. Lenny was next in line to be king, set to be crowned at year's end. He was 25 years young, handsome, bright, and well respected in the country. He had all the ingredients to be a fine king. The only issue? It wasn't the life he wanted.
Lenny loved heroes. He especially was interested in a hero that came to their world from another planet in a quest to cleanse it of evil. The hero went by the name Hugh, and he wore a dark helmet that covered his body with armor that increased his strength and gave him access to futuristic weapons like a laser gun and a laser sword that appeared by thought. When Hugh was 16 he captured a dangerous criminal named Gull (this original adventure of Hugh can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/389825/the-pit ). Gull was serving a lifetime prison sentence, and Hugh spent the past 14 years building a worldwide network of heroes powered by the same helmet technology as himself. Hugh had even created an alternate world called the Reflection Dimension, a safe place to keep the most dangerous criminals. The inhabitants of the Reflection Dimension would have all food, shelter, and digital entertainment needs supplied, and their only means of escape would be to pass a test to show that they had truly given up their evil ways (The first tale of the Reflection Dimension can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/382631/redemption-in-another-dimension ). Hugh had accomplished things, and Lenny wanted to join in and make a difference with him too. However, his father was not having any of this.
"Dad, I am not saying being the king of Prosperity isn't heroic!" Lenny protested. "I just want to travel the world and be a hero all over, not just here at home!"
"Son, you are the next in line, and your destiny is to be the next king." King Overature responded gently, but firmly.
"But what if it isn't my destiny to just be here?" Lenny asked. "How about I just submit the application to join Hugh's organization? If it doesn't work out, then I won't question my kingly calling again."
King Overature paused for a moment, deep in thought. He then smiled at his son. "Very well, you may apply. But if you don't get in before this year ends, then you go forward with your coronation."
"Yes, thank you so much!" Lenny exclaimed excitedly. He regained his composure and bowed to his father in respect, then eagerly dashed out of the room. Once Lenny was out of sight, King Overature retrieved a pen and paper with his royal insignia on it. He wrote a letter to Hugh, advising that his son would be applying to join his forces, but by his order he wanted Lenny's application secretly declined so his son would follow through with his royal duties instead. He scanned the letter so it could be delivered electronically, and soon enough his royal request was on it's way to Hugh.
December 26, 2020:
Lenny had submitted his application to become the newest hero to work for Hugh, and he already felt impatient. While he awaited a response, he figured he could do some training. Today he would focus on stealth skills. He explored the castle grounds, hiding from his father's guards. He had drawn several pictures of bombs, and he was hiding them throughout the castle in places that would likely cause a lot of damage if they were real. He had managed to hide 30 different papers, not once getting caught. He questioned why Hugh had not contacted him yet, as he thought about how perfect he would be for the job.
December 27, 2020:
"Your majesty, we have found 20 pictures of bombs hung up throughout the castle." Bill told the king nervously. Bill was the king's most trusted advisor. "Do you know who might do such a thing?"
"I suspect my son was involved with this." King Overature replied. "I gave him permission to apply to join Hugh's worldwide network of heroes. He must be training in the hope of being selected."
"With all due respect, the young prince is acting quite reckless." Bill complained. "His duties are with this kingdom, not foolish aspirations like traveling the world pursuing heroism. And sir, I can not believe you went forward with this!"
"It is not a concern Bill, I have already been in touch with Hugh." King Overature responded. "I told Hugh that I wanted Lenny's application secretly declined. Hugh has already agreed to our request based on Lenny's obligation to being the next king. Lenny can humor himself with his training all he wants. Once he does not get recruited, he will abandon his childish dreams and accept his responsibility to Prosperity."
"Very well your majesty, I will humor him as well." Bill said. "I feel you are being reckless with this plan, but I will trust your judgement for now. I will keep an eye on the prince and keep you updated in the meantime."
December 28, 2020:
Lenny was on his way to the castle gym, where he would continue training himself for his heroic work to come. Before he got there, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around and found none other than Hugh himself looking at him, beaming. Hugh was from another planet, but he looked quite human. He was 30 years old, but did not look a day over 25.
"You must be Prince Lenny Overature!" Hugh said enthusiastically. "My name is Hugh, and I understand that you want to join my worldwide team. We would love to have you, but are you sure you want to give up the throne for this?"
"More than anything!" Lenny responded excitedly. "I can't believe you're here, and that I am talking to you in person! How do I get started?"
"Well first, there are some tests you need to complete first." Hugh responded. "Once you show me you can handle those, then we can fit you with one of our helmets that will grant you the abilities our heroes use. We will train you on how to properly use the gear the helmets will grant you, and once you have that, you will be ready to be our newest hero!"
"Awesome!" Lenny responded gleefully. "Can we start right now?"
"Get some rest and a good night's sleep first." Hugh answered. "Then meet me in the castle courtyard tomorrow morning at 6 AM. Then your first test will begin. And don't tell anyone, I don't want an audience for this."
"Understood Hugh, and thank you so much!" Lenny exclaimed. "I will keep this on the down low, and I will be there tomorrow morning with bells on."
December 29, 2020:
Lenny didn't sleep at all, he was too excited about his "interview" with the legend he now knew as Hugh. Once 5:45 AM rolled around, Lenny slipped out of bed and put on his normal gym clothes. He then proceeded to the quiet, still somewhat dark, spacious courtyard. Lenny was afraid that Hugh wouldn't be there, that all of this was a dream. But once he arrived, he found that he was very much awake, with Hugh waiting there for him with a smile.
"Good morning Prince Overature!" Hugh said enthusiastically. "I hope you got some rest last night - we have a lot to cover today."
"Yeah, I got plenty of rest." Lenny lied, too excited to be tired. "And by the way, you don't have to call me prince, Lenny is fine. I don't want to be royalty, I want to be a hero like you."
"Very well Lenny." Hugh said, smiling. "My first test is to see how fast you are. Let's race 3 laps around this courtyard. After all, speed is an essential skill you will need in the field."
A quick countdown and Lenny and Hugh began their race. Lenny had a good lead initially, but ultimately tired out after the first lap, and was easily bested by Hugh.
"It's ok." Hugh told a panting, doubled over Lenny. "Let's try another test."
Hugh then directed Lenny to step back six feet before producing a small leather bag.
"In this bag I have six stones." Hugh advised. "In our line of work you will need to be able to perform evasive maneuvers, especially against things that are more dangerous than stones. Show me your dodging skills!"
Lenny nodded then positioned himself, ready for another chance to prove himself. Hugh threw the first two stones, and Lenny dodged them with ease. The last four stones were a different story, pelting Lenny's left foot, right arm, chest, and ultimately his forehead before knocking him onto the ground.
Hugh approached his fallen disciple and extended a hand, bringing Lenny to his feet.
"I won't give up on you." Hugh said reassuredly. "I will give you one more chance to qualify. Train some more tomorrow, and meet me out here in two days at 10:00 PM. If you have improved, I will fit you for a helmet and we will see how that enhances your abilities. It will be close, but should you do well, you will succeed in joining us before the year ends."
"Thank you sir." Lenny said, feeling dejected, but thankful for another try. "I won't let you down again."
December 30, 2020:
"The prince is acting strange, your majesty." Bill advised the king in his throne room. "I spotted him at the batting cages, but he did not have a bat in his hand. Instead, he was jumping around avoiding the baseballs. And yesterday, I saw him training under the hero Hugh, whom you said had already agreed to not recruit him to the cause."
King Overature frowned at this news. "This is very troubling indeed. Thank you Bill, I will contact Hugh right away and find out why he has betrayed our trust."
Bill walked outside of the castle and spotted Lenny running laps around the courtyard. He grimaced, not thinking the prince had what it took to be a professional hero, even if the king actually approved. Still, he admired the prince's tenacity. Not that it would matter. Bill thought about how all this nonsense would be over after the king spoke to Hugh, and he walked off to handle his other obligations.
Last day of 2020:
Lenny stood before Hugh in the courtyard at 10 PM. He had only a couple of hours left before he lost his chance to become a hero, but he was feeling more confident in his abiliities after a full day of training. Hugh smiled approvingly at Lenny, noticing the change in the prince's confidence and overall demeanor.
"I was going to test you again, but I can tell your skills are better already." Hugh said happily. "If you can handle the same tests with our official gear, I will officially extend an invitation into our ranks. Now I am going to fit you for a helmet. Please stand still while I scan you for this purpose."
Hugh wore a silver armored vest, and a small hole opened up in the center of the vest. A laser shot of the hole and hit Lenny. Lenny was in no pain, but could not move.
"It is a strange process registering these helmets, but it is completely harmless." Hugh reassured Lenny. "Thank you for your patience."
A vacuum sound came from the hole, and Lenny felt a strange sensation. When all was over Lenny felt like he was looking in a mirror, as Hugh now looked exactly like the prince. Lenny looked at his arms and down at his body, and then checked the selfie mode on his phone. He was horrified to find that his body was now featureless - all that was left of himself was a dark silhouette.
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?" Lenny screamed at Hugh, if that was even who this was. "AND WHO ARE YOU REALLY?"
"Sure, I will explain, former prince." Lenny's tormentor replied, even speaking in Lenny's voice back to him. The body armor briefly flashed, and Bill now stood before what was left of Lenny. "I am your father's most trusted advisor. I used to respect the king, but he has lost his backbone by humoring you in pursuing your pathetic supehero aspirations instead of putting his foot down and demanding that you simply focus on becoming king. You should also know, that after your father gave you permission to try and become a hero, he contacted Hugh and told him not to recruit you. You never had a chance to join at all."
"NO, MY FATHER WOULDN'T!" Lenny screamed, now doubled over on the ground.
"Oh, but he did." Bill said mockingly. "You apparently don't know him at all. Then again, neither you nor he know me very well either."
"Did you do this to Hugh too?" Lenny asked, now wondering how many other silhouette figures were wandering around because of Bill.
"No, I took Hugh's appearance by absorbing his features from a picture of him I printed out." Bill answered. "You aren't the only one that can use paper for personal agendas, paper bomb boy. The downside is I could only keep up Hugh's form for a couple of hours from paper copy absorptions. But with your real features absorbed in my armor, I can keep your appearance forever, and I will happily take your place as the next king. Be happy Lenny, you didn't want the crown anyway!"
Just then a figure with a black helmet and body armor whose name was Mirk appeared on the scene. He stood between Lenny and Bill, ready to assist.
"The king contacted Hugh thinking that he had been coming here to recruit the prince, which was confirmed to be false." Mirk said to Bill. "You are an imposter, and I am here to stop you. I survived a trap master recently, so you have no chance (the adventure Mirk is referencing can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/383782/hallway-of-peril )."
"This is great!" Bill said delightedly. "I will capture your features too, and besides being the king of Prosperity, I will be able to infiltrate Hugh's ranks as well! This is why I told the king about "Hugh" being here, I knew the real Hugh would put it all together and send one of you after me. Now you're mine!"
Bill began activating the laser on his armor to blast Mirk, but Mirk quickly summoned a laser gun in his hand and blasted Bill. Bill disintegrated from sight upon impact.
"What did you do to him?" Lenny asked nervously, still in the form of a dark silhouette despite the apparent defeat of Bill.
"Don't worry, he's fine." Mirk responded gently. "This gun transported him to the Reflection Dimension. It is an alternative to prison. Residents there are given a chance to take a test to see if they have changed, and if they have they will be sent back here. He has probably changed his ways and should be reappearing right now to restore you."
Minutes passed, with no sign of Bill.
"I guess he isn't returning after all." Mirk said, feeling uncomfortable over his failed prediction. "I saw this happening differently, but we can still help you. Hugh has some of the best scientists in his employ, and we can find a way to fix you...."
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" Lenny snarled at Mirk. "THANKS TO YOUR FAILURE TODAY, I CAN NOT BE A KING OR A HERO! LEAVE MY SIGHT, YOU HAVE RUINED ME!"
Mirk tried to interject, but Lenny wasn't having it. Mirk sadly took off, vowing to report his failure to Hugh, and he also silently promised to do his part to make things right for the prince.
Jan 1, 2021:
Lenny didn't return home that night, but hid in the shadows instead, pondering what to do next. Now in the early hours of the new morning, he resigned himself to returning home and grabbing some essentials before making a run for it. Suddenly he stood before a man with a mohawk, purple eyes behind party glasses, mismatched clothes, and a toothy smile that was hanging around outside of the castle grounds. The strange looking man had a laptop in his hand, and he eyed Lenny's featureless silhouette curiously.
"My name is Custom Character Creator, but you can call me CCC!" The man exclaimed. "I travel around the world freelance customizing the looks of others, and I have never seen anyone like you! You are a clear canvas, and I must offer my services to you. What do you say?"
If Lenny had a visible mouth, it would be grinning. "You may be able to help me sir." Lenny replied. "I was once Prince Lenny Overature. Thanks to the failure of a hero in Hugh's employ, I have now lost my identity. Would you be able to restore my features with your custom powers?"
"Yes, I can restore you for an hour at a time!" CCC answered gleefully. "And if we time it right, we can get you crowned as king!"
"That would be good, I will need the resources of the kingdom for my new purpose." Lenny replied. "An hour at a time won't be much, so I will need you to join my cause for this to work. Hugh's organization has failed to protect lives and make the world a better place - just look at what has happened to me. However, we can start a new organization that will dismantle Hugh's, and we will protect others correctly, including protection for your own eccentric lifestyle. What do you say? Will you be my first recruit?"
"Sounds like a good time!" CCC replied eagerly. "I will join you future king!"
"Call me Leftover." The former Lenny Overature responded. "After Hugh's associate failed, this is all that is left of me. But when I am done with them, there will be nothing left at all."
Redemption vs Schemes: Hugh & Leftover
This story is based on the Reedsy.com prompt "Write about two characters who each want to change the same thing, but resolve to go about it in very different ways."
Hero Characters:
Hugh
Hugh is an alien that looks very human. He cleansed his home planet from evil, and he came to the Earth to do the same. He uses a dark helmet that covers his body with armor that increases his strength and gives him access to futuristic weapons that appear by thought. When Hugh was 16, he captured a dangerous criminal named Gull (this original adventure of Hugh can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/389825/the-pit ). Now 30 years old, Hugh has spent the past 14 years building a worldwide network of heroes powered by the same helmet technology as himself. Hugh has even created an alternate world called the Reflection Dimension, a safe place to keep the most dangerous criminals. The inhabitants of the Reflection Dimension all have food, shelter, and digital entertainment needs supplied, and their only means of escape is to pass a test to show that they have truly given up their evil ways. If they are able to do this, they are also cleared of all criminal charges (The first tale of the Reflection Dimension can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/382631/redemption-in-another-dimension ).
Mirk
Mirk is one of Hugh's associates. He uses the same helmet/armor/weapon gear as his boss. His brother Tam also works for Hugh, and the pair have worked together in the past. In Mirk's last mission, he sent the traitor that stole Prince Lenny Overature's features to the Redemption Dimension before his own features could be stolen, but the villain did not return, resulting in the prince being stuck in a silhouette form. Mirk is currently wrestling with guilt over this turn of events. First appearance: https://theprose.com/post/383782/hallway-of-peril )
Villain Characters:
Leftover
Originally Prince Lenny Overature of the country of Prosperity, Lenny was next in line to become the king. However, his true desire was to join his idol Hugh's hero network. King Overature allowed him to apply for Hugh's team, while secretly contacting Hugh requesting that his application be declined. Hugh appeared to Lenny shortly after and began interviewing him for the opportunity to become a new recruit. This turned out to be a trick, as this Hugh was really the king's trusted advisor Bill. Bill stole Lenny's features, leaving Lenny's body as a dark silhouette. Plotting to pose as Lenny and become king, Bill's plans were foiled when Hugh's associate Mirk came on the scene and sent Bill to the Reflection Dimension, assuming that Bill would return reformed. This did not go according to plan, and Lenny vowed revenge on Hugh and his organization, taking the name Leftover. Leftover plans to build his own team that will eliminate Hugh's group, and do what he feels will be a better job in being heroes.
CCC
CCC (Custom Character Creator) is an eccentric man with a mohawk, purple eyes behind party glasses, mismatched clothes, and a toothy smile that uses a special laptop to alter the appearances of others to their liking for an hour. CCC has done work around the world, and tends to be a good source of information. His true motivations are a mystery, but at this point he has pledged his loyalty to Leftover.

*****
(This story takes place after the events of "The Prince's Year End Goals! Destiny Beyond The Throne" - https://theprose.com/post/403057/the-prince-s-year-end-goals-destiny-beyond-the-throne )
Mirk entered his headquarter's main office and took a seat. Mirk's boss Hugh normally contacted his employees by video chat (the company is global, after all), but Hugh felt that this meeting should be in person.
"I'm sorry boss, I failed to help the prince." Mirk said sadly. "I thought sending the enemy to the Reflection Dimension would result in him returning as a changed man, but he didn't want to come back. And now that poor prince is stuck in a silhouette body."
"I understand your feelings, but you did what you had to do." Hugh responded gently. "If you didn't take action when you did, you could have had your features stolen too. If the villain was able to freely parade around as one of ours, catastrophic things could have happened. You succeeded in preventing this."
"Maybe...." Mirk said, still feeling terrible. "But the prince was so angry, and he didn't want help from our scientists. What if I created a new villain from my judgement call back there?"
"I am going to show you something in a moment that will ease this concern." Hugh responded. "But even if the prince did take a dark path, then we would do our best to help him. As you know, my goal is to cleanse the Earth of evil. I think the best way to do this is to give those that commit evil the chance to reform. This is why I created the Redemption Dimension. This is why some of our newest recruits are former adversaries."
Mirk smiled at his boss's words and goals. This is what drew him into joining Hugh's team in the first place.
"Now for the reassurance." Hugh said. Hugh turned on the screen in the room and a news clip from the country of Prosperity began playing.
"Prince Lenny Overature was attacked by a traitor to the king." The newscaster reported. "The traitor was sent to the Redemption Dimension by an associate of Hugh's hero agency. Based on the events of this ordeal, the prince requested a private coronation. The following footage of the coronation was released to us."
Hugh and Mirk then saw footage of a small ceremony where Prince Lenny Overature was crowned as king. Lenny had all of his features intact, and he flashed a big smile to the camera.
"I am not sure what happened, but apparently the silhouette transformation the prince, I mean king, suffered from has worn off." Hugh said happily. "Everything seems to have worked out."
"This is great!" Mirk said excitedly. "Thank you for showing me this! I will work even harder, and I will do my best to improve in my work!"
"I know you will." Hugh said, smiling. "I am thankful to have you on board with me Mirk."
*****
A few days later Mirk received an invitation from the King of Prosperity requesting a visit. He assumed that Lenny wanted to meet up and make peace. Mirk appreciated the opportunity for closure and accepted the invite. Just in case, he donned his black helmet and armored himself, and he also had a stun gun and a laser sword at his disposal.
Mirk arrived in Prosperity and entered the throne room of the king's castle. Mirk stood before the throne and bowed to King Lenny Overature.
"Hero of Hugh, the last time we met I was very mean to you." King Lenny said solemnly. "I wish to express my deepest regret for the way I spoke to you, and I beg your forgiveness."
"Thank you your highness, and please allow me to apologize for any inconvenience I caused you." Mirk replied gratefully. "On behalf of Hugh and his network, I hope we can serve you well in the future!"
"I hope for the same thing." King Lenny responded. "Please make yourself comfortable in our kingdom as long as you wish."
"I actually should be heading back, but I am happy that I was able to see you again, your majesty." Mirk said, bowing once more. "I am pleased to see you doing so well. The crown suits you."
*****
Mirk walked out of the castle feeling great. His life high wore off as a massive goblin blocked the path to his ship ride home.
"Hero of Hugh, you may go no farther!" The goblin sneered at Mirk. "My master has unfinished business with you!"
"And who would that be?" Mirk asked, summoning his laser sword into his hand with a thought.
"Oh you'll see." The goblin answered sinisterly. "But first, let me introduce myself. My name is Hypnorc, and you are about to be under my control."
Hypnorc's eyes began swirling, and Mirk didn't turn away soon enough. His helmet provided no protection. The eye contact had been made, and Mirk was now Hypnorc's captive (Hypnorc first appeared here: https://theprose.com/post/401577/the-true-naughty-listers ).
Leftover then approached Mirk and Hypnorc, still very much in his silhouette form. CCC, looking wacky as ever, was following close behind.
"I hope you enjoyed meeting the king." Leftover sneered in his noble, but menacing tone. "One of my friends agreed to take on my old characteristics and play the role of king, thanks to CCC's customization skills. And Hypnorc here has my father hypnotized into believing I am completely back to normal, and he has been assuring the kingdom of this. And now I have one of Hugh's own at our command too. So yes Mirk, I am doing quite well!"
"You thought that guy on the throne was the king, right?" CCC laughed gleefully. "No wonder my work gets worldwide recognition!"
Mirk felt his free will slipping away, unable to speak or fight his captors. Soon enough he was a puppet under Hypnorc's complete control.
"Don't worry friend, your time has not come yet!" Leftover sneered, not sounding reassuring at all. "And the sight of you honestly makes me sick, so you won't be staying here for long. However, you are going to get something for me before you are dismissed."
"What can I get for you, master?" Mirk asked obediently.
"You are going to get me a helmet from Hugh." Leftover answered. "The helmet will have the security measures Hugh no doubt has implemented into it disabled. The helmet will be modified as well. I would like the helmet to be yellow, with a toothy grin painted on it. You see Mirk, I am building my own hero organization, one that will ultimately destroy the one you belong to, and mine will be a superior group. Your master can't cleanse the world of evil if associates like you are causing victims like me to be stuck in silhouette bodies. So although what I am doing could be considered evil, the work we do in the future will be much more effective at destroying evil than anything you and yours can do."
"Yes master Leftover." Mirk replied. "I will need help in getting this helmet for you though. I can't convince Hugh to do this on my own."
"But of course." Leftover replied condescendingly. "Hypnorc will encourage whoever needs to be convinced to help you at headquarters. Now, he can't accompany you in his present form, a giant orc would likely stand out. Can you think of someone he could impersonate in order to blend in? My associate CCC can alter his look to that appropriate person's appearance."
"I know someone he can impersonate." Mirk replied, presenting a picture of his brother Tam to the villains. "My brother Tam is away for the next few days, but we can tell my colleagues that we ran into each other and returned together."
"Lovely, I like the way you think Mirk." Leftover snickered. "And rest assured, you are indeed serving me very well!"
*****
Within an hour Hypnorc returned to meet Leftover outside of the castle, holding a yellow helmet with a toothy grin painted on it. Still in his Tam form, he then transformed back into his normal goblin body.
"Nice customization!" Leftover said. "Guess CCC is not the only one that is good at this kind of thing. I take it the mission was a success?"
"Yes sir." Hypnorc replied, grinning. "I had the pleasure of an audience with Hugh himself. Thanks to my skills, he was quite eager to mod the appearance of this helmet, and remove his security protocols. He even threw in a couple of laser guns, a laser sword, and one of those guns that sends people to the Reflection Dimension. He even promised to forget that our meeting, and transaction took place. However sir, I could have ended things right then and there. Why didn't you have me do that?"
"A couple of reasons, actually." Leftover replied with a smile. "First, I wanted to test your loyalty, which you passed with flying colors. Second, I want to play the long game with this. Before we destroy Hugh and his network, I want ours to grow. I will be looking for a scientist that can mass produce these helmets for us. And eventually, I will release to the public how weak Hugh and his group truly are. After all, we just made off with his precious technology, without leaving any evidence of our involvement. An organization that weak will never have what it takes to defeat evil. However, we will prevail."
"This is going to be quite the ride!" Hypnorc cackled gleefully. "I can't wait to see what happens next!"
*****
"Everything ok, Hugh?" Mirk asked over their video chat.
"Yes, I just feel a bit tired." Hugh replied. "I feel like a lot happened today, but nothing really happened."
"I know what you mean." Mirk agreed. "All I did was briefly visit King Lenny, and I feel like so much more happened. Anyway, you have a mission for me?"
"Yes!" Hugh replied, gaining some steam back. "I need you and your brother to take care of a disturbance in a downtown alley. This should be a small job, but even so, all jobs are important in our quest to end evil."
"Yes sir, you can count on us!" Mirk said gleefully. He then made a silent vow that no matter what dangers they faced, big or small, he would always fight for what was good. No matter how long it took, they would succeed at ending all evil....

“It’s been a while since we’ve gone on a mission together. Are you ready, brother?”
“I sure am!” Mirk responded to his brother Tam enthusiastically. “I’m not sure why Hugh is responding to a call about an alley cat though.”
“Because the cat is making people unusually ill.” Tam replied. “At the very least, it should be an easier mission than that trapmaster Hall.” (This previous adventure can be read here: https://theprose.com/post/383782/hallway-of-peril )
“True story.” Mirk said, as they began walking into the alley of the downtown city their assignment led them to. The alley stretched for what seemed like miles. Undeterred, Mirk and Tam began their search for the mysterious feline.
The two heroes heard a hiss behind them, and they turned around and saw a gray, feral cat. Per their boss Hugh’s protocol, Mirk and Tam wore dark helmets that provided full body armor, and they had stun laser guns they could make appear in their hands by thought. Before anything could be done, the cat lunged at Tam and bit his shoulder.
“OWWWWW!” Tam cried out. “That cat bit right through my armor!”
“Are you ok?” Mirk asked his brother in a concerned tone.
“Not really....” Tam replied, feeling queasy. Tam removed his helmet, and his body armor vanished, leaving him in a t-shirt and jeans. Tam then hunched over and began vomiting out kitty litter.
“TAM, WHAT IS GOING ON?” Mirk screamed in shock. He pulled himself together, then put his hand on Tam’s shoulder as kitty litter continued to pour out of Tam’s mouth. “Did you eat kitty litter before we came here?”
“Of.... course.... not....” Tam managed to say, still feeling sick. “The.... cat....”
The cat then lunged at Mirk and bit his ankle.
“OWWWW!” Mirk screamed in pain. He then felt sick to his stomach as well, and removed his helmet, leaving him in civilian clothes. Mirk then began vomiting kitty litter too.
The cat hissed again, and the two ill heroes felt helpless. They had no strength, no protection, and they were still spewing kitty litter out of their systems. What was the deal with this cat?
Suddenly another armored figure appeared on the scene. His armor was similar to what Mirk and Tam were previously covered in, but his helmet was yellow with a toothy smile painted on it.
“Don’t worry friends, I will help you!” The figure said in a friendly voice that sounded like it could belong to nobility. A laser gun appeared in the figure’s hand, and a blast took the cat down. At that point, Mirk and Tam’s sickness stopped.
“The cat is unconscious now.” The figure told Mirk and Tam. “You guys work for Hugh, right?”
“Yes, that’s right.” Tam replied, relieved that he was no longer throwing up kitty litter, but still feeling weak. “And you?”
“I’m Larry, at your service!” The figure responded happily. “I work for a new, up and coming hero organization. Why don’t you take the cat back to Hugh? You guys probably have some great scientists that can figure out why it is making people vomit kitty litter from its bites!”
“Yeah, we’ll do that, thanks Larry.” Mirk said, exhausted but grateful. He put his helmet back on, and armor recovered his body. Mirk then summoned a laser gun that could transfer anyone blasted by it safely back to their base. He blasted the cat, Tam, and then himself, leaving Larry alone.
Larry removed his helmet, and the armor disappeared, revealing a dark silhouette. “You can come out now Doctor Sic.” The figure said in a tone that was no longer friendly, but menacing.
A man in his early 30s ventured out from behind a dumpster. He was dressed in a fancy suit. “Well Leftover, how did you like my demonstration?”
“Very nice.” Leftover answered sinisterly. “So if I am understanding right, you gave the cat a temporary toxin that would cause anyone bit by it to vomit kitty litter? And by the time the cat and those boys return to their boss, the toxin will no longer be in any of their systems?”
“You are correct.” Dr. Sic replied. “That is but one of the toxins I have developed. Those fools are now back at their base with an ordinary cat, with no way to trace their previous illness back to us. If you don’t mind me asking, you could have easily eliminated them just now. Why didn’t you?”
“All part of my long term plan.” Leftover replied, laughing. “Those two will have to report back to their boss that they only completed their mission because of another hero. Hugh will learn that there is another organization that can handle the job better than his own people. Once I have completely obliterated their reputation, then I will enjoy finishing them off.”
“A fascinating strategy.” Dr. Sic replied. “So have I proven that my services would be an asset to your team?”
“I will be blunt with you doctor.” Leftover responded. “I am looking for a scientist that can mass produce the helmet I used today when I operated as Larry. However, your toxin skills are quite lovely, and I feel they will definitely come in handy in the future. So yes, if you are willing, I can and will utilize your scientific expertise.”
“I accept, and I look forward to contributing to your vision.” Doctor Sic replied. “Those weak heroes couldn’t handle the kitty litter, my next toxin will be far more painful!”
The two villains cackled, then exited the scene. The deep alley was then vacant and silent once again.
