I remained discreet
During a middle school WWII history class, I explained that when a ship sinks, the crew goes into the ocean. How did they stay afloat? I used the term, "Mae West" device. Silence. I then said, "buoyancy". Crickets. It wasn't until I said, "Google images" that anyone understood. Discretion rules!
My Friend in Tampa
Walking around Tampa around two in the morning.
I know, smart right?
One of the many homeless took up stride and struck up conversation.
Didn't ask for anything. Just wanted to talk.
At the end, he whispered:
"If ya ever around here again and need anything, I got you, man."
That Still, Small Voice
Walking down the street,
urgency to call
you overtakes me.
I distract you from
taking the subway.
Next day, the News tells
of deaths underground.
Santa’s beard has mice.
I once was sent to fetch a beard
For a most jolly fellow.
From it's box a mouse appeared!
I let out a small bellow.
But still into the box I peered
My legs a-turning jell-o...
It turned out worse than I had feared.
The white was stained with yellow!
Essential oil invades air
From oil burners in my lair
Until one day, I came to see
A tealight candle had been set free
Upon the floor it sat ablaze
As though placed there for my gaze
No soul had entered, except I
So can someone please tell me why?
I was 12. Doesn't matter: it happened. The blue mist appeared from the fireplace, I was terrified and mesmerised at once.
The dark male ghost behind the apparition has haunted me ever since. Whomever appeared as a spirit that night has followed me ever since..
Perhaps Cereal Instead
I was fifteen years of age when it happened, but I will never forget it. I was going to make scrambled eggs when lo and behold I cracked an egg open over a bowl and there were two small little yellow yolks from one egg, -twins, -if that’s not miraculous.
"Spare change? I've just left prison, ain't got money", he stopped me. "Nope", I flipped my pockets inside out showing just a rosary I used to carry. "I love Bible, read it a lot in prison. You know my favourite part? >> ...then he released Barabbas...<<", he laughed and moved on.
One Last Patient
It was the end of the day and you were probably tired, but you took one last patient. Then the world shook and the Cypress freeway collapsed. It could have been you beneath the rubble, trying to drive home; I would have never known my father.
In the warm black sea I floated, awake and aware. I could not move and I could not speak but I could listen. Slowly, the fibers of the futon replaced the warm dry waters of that sea and my finger twitched. In tongues he spoke, like a cat he sat.
