He didn't want to go back to work. He was done in court and tired of the day. Work always limped on and on. He pulled out his ancient-looking phone. It was rather new but ancient to his technologically advanced son. He pulled out his earbuds.
"Hey Will!" He looked up from his playlist, finger hovering over the play button. He smacked on a smile and put his hand out for a hearty shake, a man's shake. If only the young people knew how to shake. Their hands are always so limp and slimy. That or they try to make your hand bleed black and blue.
"Hello... Jeff, right?"
"Yup. They sure have got you covering a lot, don't they?"
"Charlotte's out of the office. Her kid's sick so they've got me covering."
"Well it should be a quick settlement, shouldn't it? The camera says it all. That bus driver nailed that poor girl.
"It should but who knows what my boss'll say. Nothing's simple with him." Will huffed. "Anyway how have you been?"
"Oh good. Just took the family on a little vacation to Midland beach for the fourth of July."
"Ah. Always loved it down there. My whole family still lives down there."
"You grew up there?"
"Yep, born and raised. Should have stayed there too but that's another story."
"Really? We could have grown up together. My family is from there too..." Jeff looked off toward the park with its water fountains gushing over. "Hey what's your last name?"
"Donovan."
"Are you by any chance related to Marty Donovan?" Will let out a little laugh of disbelief.
"He's my great granddad." Jeff's eyes widened and he shook his head in disbelief. He ran his gnarled hand through his wisty grey hair.
"Well he's my grandmother's brother."
