Tree of Signs
My limbs grow high up in the air
Sprouting the seed planted in my heart
The seed of my soul
I hold the world with so much care
With so much to offer
From the day I was born
To the day I die old
Fingertips grace an endless sky
A million stars sparkle in my eyes
Gentle breeze shakes loose a smile
Even when eyes stream
I flourish under the sun’s beam
Illuminating a sacred choice
To rejoice with my signs
I (Don’t) Miss You
I used to not know
How to really let you go
Because I missed you
But now I know
I never really missed you
I missed how I felt
I missed feeling free
Within a warm embrace
I missed feeling seen
Your eyes set the scene
Ocean blues I'd dive into
Drown without thinking
I'd keep on sinking
For as long as I missed it
I don't anymore
We've grown separate
On our own separate ways
Now I teach myself
How I can be free
Armed with love only for me
Here I reminisce
On all I once missed
Now I only wish I knew
My self love sooner
Handmade Garden
Begin again
See the heart
Sign the soul
In your handmade garden
Plant a seed and see
From ground zero a flower blooms
Hold the stem in your hands
Take in how sweet it is
Like the love buried deep within
Plant a seed and see
A tree appear in your palm
Limbs one and the same
Breeze shaking and showing
Nature’s perfection
And a reflection
Looking back at you
Why I Write
Humans are social beings
We rely on one another
From food, to shelter, to love
But what is one to do
When food for thought lies stale
and rots inside the skull?
This was my predicament
At first I thought I was condemned
to an isolation without end
You see, I was born without a voice
And when given the choice
I chose to sign
But my world couldn’t communicate with me
Others felt awkward as my hands flew in sign language
Beautiful and pure to me,
The world saw it as a reason to try and cure me
But when given pen and paper
My hands of creation found a new avenue
Creating words in ink too
I poured out my thoughts
and the world saw my mind
So significant
I write to dismantle the barriers
of language, seeking human connection
I write to dismantle the barriers
of my soul, seeking human expression

Hands of Creation
Hands of Creation,
you opened my eyes.
You fluttered your wings
and dared to sing.
Face of Designs,
the emotions you wear
complement my signs.
Your boundless expressions
set my heart free.
Free for all to see.
Body of Motion,
you taught me
never to be afraid.
The space I occupy
is as natural and endless
as the ocean.
The Woman on the Sidewalk
Kind eyes and a warm smile
She glanced my way
and parted her lips
The words she said I'll never know
For as soon as she appeared
The words she let go
were swept up in the wind
And she, too, disappeared
Never to be seen again
Though she didn't know me
Nor I her
I'd be lying if I said it didn't sting
When I didn't understand a thing
Join The Dance
"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance." - Alan Watts
Why, hello there!
Welcome to life.
Here’s a rule they won’t teach in school
Be sure to listen well
When you’re stuck in the mud
Drowning in strife
Take a chance if you dare
And join the dance!
Mr. Lonely,
Feet to the beat!
Here he begins to spin, smilin’
A scene not seen in years
Not since his wife left him
Left him in tears!
He held on for so long
Couldn’t move on
His will was gone
He played it as safe as he could
Stayed the same, a standstill
But he soon understood
This was no thrill
Now he sees another dancer
Join the dance, sir!
Move with it
Groove with it
Make sense out of it!
Feel the song on stage
Change happens constantly
Life’s only constant
Ms. Perfection,
She heard it all through childhood
The brightest star they ever seen
Brighter than the guiding North Star
From then on she did all she could
All she could to avoid failure
She wouldn’t dream of taking risks
Of sailing on unfamiliar seas
Seemed to be a steady sailor
Oh I bet she just couldn’t wait
For another repeat of eight
But staying the same isn’t wise
Let’s try six on for size
Any direction you please!
Trapped in a trance of fear
Join the dance, my dear!
Move with it
Groove with it
Make sense out of it!
Feel the song on stage
Change happens constantly
Life’s only constant
Antidote for a Deaf Man
I tumble into this world with deaf ears
Almost immediately the world searched and crafted an antidote
Bionic ears and speech lessons for years
Tongue suppress emotion
Pain radiates around the mouth
All in the name of progress,
So I can come about good as new
Singing as I join in the symphony
I remain a dis-harmonic key
As the Earth spun in motion
Beneath my feet
I caught fluttering wings out of the corner of my eyes
Limbs grew from my body and soared among the heavens
Painting visual symphonies after visual symphonies in the skies
Up there! In the wide open air!
See my thoughts as I feel the graceful flow of my hands
See my thoughts as I feel eyebrows shift and a smile take shape
See my thoughts as my body feels the open space for expression
Signs weaved the world
And spun it in motion
When I sing the antidote is not for me
The antidote is for others who can’t accept me
Their antidote molds me in their image
All the while my spirit is diminished
When my hands fly in the sky
Signing my soul in the stars
Twinkling and radiating across the night sky
I look down on signs weaving the world
And spinning it in motion
