Challenge
According to a 2017 study done by me, stardustfalling (PhD in imagination, depression, and depressing poetry), "I'm fine" is the most commonly told lie in the world. Write about it, in any format you choose.
I’m Fine - A Sonnet
I'm always telling people that I'm fine,
The casual response to "how are you?"
I'm realistic and I hate to whine
But the fineness story is rarely true.
The word brings with it post-traumatic stress,
And as I strive to squeeze it past my gums
My heart believes my wording less and less,
Til "how are you?" "I'm fine" quickly becomes
The opposite of how I meant to feel,
The subtext shares a different point of view;
It says give me connection that is real,
I'm drowning here, I don't know what to do.
I'll likely nod and say I'm fine, and smile,
Then wander aimlessly into the crowd.
If only I, every once in awhile,
Could say what I am thinking, I'd be proud.
