Harry Situation Reviews: For Honor
So over the weekend I stopped by the nearest redbox so I could have something that distracts me from studying for my geophysics exam. The first item I rented was the Oscar nominated film Arrival, and the second item I was going to rent was Resident Evil 7, but my short attention span directed my focus to another the new game titled For Honor, an action adventure fighting game about knights, vikings, and samurais battling each other and was developed by Ubisoft (Assassin's Creed series). So I rented that and played that over the weekend.
What? You wanted me to review Resident Evil 7? Too bad. Write your own review about it.
As mentioned For Honor is Ubisoft's newest game about three factions battle it out on a fictional landscape to determine who is the superior warrior. The three factions you can play as are The Chosen (Samurai), The Warborn (Vikings), and The Legion (Knights) to which will lead into another debate of who is better like Pokemon GO's Team Instinct, Team Mystic, and Team Valor (BTW, Instinct rules! :P). Each faction has four different class types all with unique armors, weapons, and abilities. And that's my first positive, each class has their own distinctive methods of combat and their own variety of weapons to use. The class I enjoyed playing the most is the peacekeeper from the Knight's faction. I love how she uses two swords in combat and I love her overall look.
Another big positive is the customization. You first start off designing your emblem to whatever way you see fit. Next, once you progress through the game you can unlock new custom gear such as armor and weapon upgrades. My peacekeeper never looked more badass!
The biggest element for this game is that it serves as a multiplayer experience, and how does that hold up? Honestly it works pretty well... WHEN IT FUCKING WANTS TO! The biggest problem I had experience was that most of the times I tried playing I always got some kind of server error, which would boot me back to the main menu. I think this is partially due to my router but still this is ridiculous. But the times when I can actually play, it is basically battle royale at its finest. You can settle for single 1v1, 2v2, or 4v4 combat in Brawl and Deathmatch modes. The best mode, however, is Dominion where you and three others can slaughter hundreds of small AI soldiers while battling against other players at the same time.
The controls take a while just to get used to. Basically for combat (since I'm using an XBOX controller for this) to attack you have to move your right analogue stick to the direction to want to attack then use RB for light attacks and RT for heavy attacks. To block, you have to move the analogue stick in the direction where your opponent is going to attack. It's basic trial and error but once you got it down you'll be the ultimate conqueror. But I guess if you really want to win, just do what everybody does and just start mashing buttons like crazy until your opponent drops dead.
In the graphics department the game looks really good. A lot of detail to the settings and warriors. I like how the seasons change within the maps, and there is also day and night cycles.
I bet there are some that are wondering if there is a single player campaign to this game. Well I can reassure you that there is, but it's not worth it. The campaign is just a long tutorial for all classes and the plot behind it all makes no sense. You can honestly skip it and just go for the online modes, which was probably Ubisoft's plan from the start.
Overall while the game is clunky at times it is actually really fun to play. It was really cool to be able to play as these historic warriors and just fight other people online. As someone who doesn't usually play online games, this is one exception. I'd say give it a try.
For battle... for glory... for the GRADING SCALE!!!!!! CHAAAARGGE!!!!
Positives: Negatives:
-Competitive multiplayer -Bland campaign
-Customization -Constant server errors
-Distinct classes -Controls are off at times
-Cool execution moves
-Stunning graphics
Final Grade: C+
