Show Down (Part 4)
The blast of the riffle ricocheted around the barren street. Vertilline cursed at herself. She had flinched and the shot missed the general by about an inch to his left. Luckily, it had also missed Fisher by about the same distance.
There was a pause for several seconds as both General Riggs and Fisher glared at Vertilline. Then the clash of steel against copper rang in the streets again as the two got back to their fight. Vertilline reloaded the rifle. She brought it to her shoulder and took aim again.
Fisher glanced over and yelled in a slightly strained voice, "Verdy, I'd rather you didn't shoot at me again. Baider and half a dozen of the Sky Pearl's crew are on their way here now. All I got to do is hold off this guy." He swung a hard downward strike at the general's hat, and the pipe snapped in two. "How the bloody-" Fisher's sentence was cut off as a long drawn out rumble shook the ground. A low pitch, sounding somewhat similar to a double bass being played very close by, permeated the air. Vertilline had an imminent feeling of doom that somehow the sound was related to the ground shaking.
She glared at Fisher, "What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything," Fisher retorted with a rather perplexed expression. He turned to General Riggs and asked "What did you do?"
Riggs was slowly backing away. He was shaking his head as though dazed. His sword hung limply in his hand and he stumbled slightly as he moved into an alleyway.
Vertilline didn't like the looks of that. "Fisher I think we need to leave. Now."
"I got a feeling your right. Perhaps we should run." Fisher inched slowly away from where the general had been standing.
