On The Slopes of The Old Man
She had a fair stride
And falling locks to drive a man wild
And she skipped as she went
And she lived on the slopes of the Old Man
With blushing her cheeks
And a fair maidens heart
Did she swear she would marry a soldier
And she sat and she spun
With a song in her heart
And she lived on the slopes of the Old Man
And the word was sent back
To this fair waiting maid
Her betrothed had been lost in the trenches
And she wept and she swore
She'd love no man no more
And she cried on the slopes of the Old Man
T'was a dew day in spring
As she gazed out o'er Coniston
That she dried up her eyes
And she cried her goodbyes
And she moved o'er the crags
And she died on the slopes of the Old Man
Now she skips as she goes
In the moons twilight glows
With her lover in hand
For a ring on her hand
And she haunts on the slopes of the Old Man
(The Old Man of Coniston, for those of a mind, stands proud of Coniston Water in Cumbria)
