Doorstep
I sat quietly on the edge of my bed, I was waiting for the call. I had heard earlier from my cousin that my childhood pet had passed away, but no one had thought to contact me yet. My mom was nearing the end of her days also, not that she ever wanted to talk to me. Ever since my dad passed away the only person that wanted to contact me was my cousin, something about me being too much like him. In all honesty it wasn't much different then life when he was alive, life in my family was known for it's crazy amounts of solitude. I heard a faint buzzing from my bed. I picked up my phone, it was the office. Probably another call about how they have to drop a few more employees and how I had to go do it. I picked up the phone, "Hello Kate! We have an emergency! Come right awa—" it cut off. I wonder what could be such a big emergency that they had to call me at what— ten o'clock at night. I figured it must be something important, maybe we had finally found it. I scurried to get dressed and then jumped into my truck and drove towards the office as fast as I could, legally.
When I opened the door Oliver rushed over and practically dragged me towards the lab. "Wh— What is it Oliver?"
"It's here! It arrived!" He chanted excitedly.
"What? What Oliver?"
"The thing, the thing we've been looking for."
"The—"
"Yeah!" I couldn't help being excited, when Oliver was excited. I opened the door and walked in to see a… dog?
"Um guys? That's just a dog."
"Give it a second Kate, you'll see," Sam commented. I waited, and waited.
"It's still just a dog."
"I told you guys it would stop doing the thing when Kate got here," Eve muttered.
"What thing guys?"
"It was— It's doing it again," I watched as the so called dog became a cat.
"Did that thing? Did it just shape shift?!" I exclaimed.
"Yeah it did, we've seen it become several types of dogs and cats, but nothing else," Oliver explained.
"When did you get it?"
"Taylor here brought it in about two hours ago," Sam stated.
"Where'd you find it Taylor?"
"So I was in the Amazon's then I came home and it showed up at my doorstep," Taylor said.
"It just showed up at your doorstep?"
"Yup."
"Okay then..."
"So we were wondering what to do with it, and then we remembered you wanted a pet so—" Eve picked it up "—here's your new pet."
"So you guys all expect me to take home a mysterious creature, that might be super dangerous, at the drop of a hat." Everyone nodded. "Then you all know me very well." I picked up the thing and placed it in the cage and drove home. As I laid down to go to bed I heard a slight scream from my living room, but I had probably just left the TV on.
