The Daughter of the Sea
I once knew a girl,
The daughter of the sea
She was as pretty as a pearl,
With lips that tasted like salt
And her spirit was free
Like her mother,
She was beautiful but chaotic,
Calm but smothering
An exalt to many became neurotic to her,
Provoking emptiness and a longing so intense
It would wear a hole in her human heart
Being bound to the land above,
She could only visit when she needed a sense of belonging on her part
Though there came a day when temporary wasn’t enough
And as she was floating in the grand vastness,
She wondered whether or not she could notice her tears underwater,
She wondered whether or not it was worth the time and effort to drown
That day she considered a suffocating madness,
As she questioned her identity as the sea’s daughter
There were never any second thoughts before immersing
Herself into the wild and untamed
There had never been any rehearsing,
Still she smiled unashamed
At first, the only sound surrounding her
Were the waves splashing above
Until all she could hear was her pulse pounding
And clashing in her ear
Until there was nothing left to feel but the water filling her lungs
How ironic, she thought, that water could burn
How the sensation in her chest wasn’t nearly as bad as the stung in her head
Though she was gasping for air,
There was never a moment where she fled
She believed herself to be hollow,
Thus she filled her lungs with water -
So much more than she could swallow
And as her lungs began to totter,
Down went the daughter
Of the sea
