Fog of the North: Book two of Nydria Series (excerpts from chapter one)
-The captain swore violently. “What the…? Why the blazes are pirates this far North? The Straight of Astydda should be frozen sol-” The rest of his sentence was lost in the blast of an explosive shell hitting the bow of his ship.
-“What’ll we do, sir?”
The captain growled to himself and then came to a decision. “Fire a mortar flare.”
“But sir, that will light us up like a beacon.”
“Those pirates already know where we are! Best we can do is shine a light on ’em and fire back.”
“Aye, sir.”
-Captain Paige stepped forward, “All your questions can be answered simply. We are mercenaries, not pirates. The law stating that a 'woman can’t be a captain' is your superstition and does not apply to us. Also, last time I checked we didn’t quite follow Brefen’s customs did we, Baider?”
“No ma’am we didn’t follow Brefen’s customs when we stole from the vault and won’t follow Brefen’s customs when we steal from this ship.” Replied the big man with a grin.
-“Mercenaries, eh? How is that better than pirates?”
“It’s an honor thing.” replied Paige. “You see, as mercenaries our loyalty is bought good and solid. A pirate can be bought, but then he will most probably turn against his buyer if a new profit arises.”
-“Captain Mikel Vermeulen, show us to the secret compartment in your cabin.”
“What compartment?” retorted Captain Mikel. “There ain’t no compartment-” His sentence was cut short by the pressure of Baider’s blunderbuss against his stomach.
Baider’s eyebrow twitched slightly as he asked, “Then there shouldn’t be a problem of us looking around your cabin, should there?”
Random Quotes: (ones I have yet to put into any story, but would one day like to use)
-"You want to know what I see when I look at the world?" The man's voice was now an intense and angry whisper. "I see ants. Millions of mindless people crawling on each other trying to reach a higher place. And there are pillars set up above them. All the pitiful creatures are trying to climb to the top. Some of them even make it. They stand out above the others. They become the models for others; they become targets. They fear for their lives, because they know that all the other beings are tying to steel their thrones to throw them down, so that they can fill the place instead. And they do, it happens again and again and again. The struggle is eternal and pointless." His had steadily risen in volume so that at the end he was yelling. "That is what I see when I look at the world. Pitiful, pathetic, power seeking, insects!"
-"You wish to know about Trolls – the massive, slow moving, rock farmers? Well, settle yourself down, because these creatures take a fair amount of time to explain."
-"I can teach you how to use music to control magic. But first you must find an instrument that suites your magic."
