Harry Situation Reviews: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever Marvel can...
Spider-Man returns as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland reprises as everyone’s favorite web-head as he tackles his high school life with his superhero life. I know it sounds repetitive but it works better in this film than it did in the other films. More on that later. So on top of balancing his life, he’s gotta prove to Tony Stark/Iron Man (played again by Robert Downey Jr.) that he’s got what it takes to be a hero while also battling a new criminal dubbed the Vulture (played by Michael Keaton).
I think it’s safe to say that this was a fun and awesome Spider-Man movie, and definitely unlike any Spider-Man movie that came before. This is basically Spider-Man’s first running as a superhero and he’s still young and trying to get the hang of things, which is something that works in this film’s favor. It’s like an origin story, but a whole different kind of origin story.
You see Peter Parker’s struggles in high school; and that’s something I really want to highlight. The fact that Spider-Man is still a kid. He’s only fifteen years old. This is what made the character so relatable after all these years. I think, to me, the biggest different between DC and Marvel comes down to their heroes. DC makes heroes you aspire to be while Marvel makes heroes you can relate to; and I think this film hit the nail on that.
All the actors do an amazing job in their portrayals. I think Tom Holland is probably the best Spider-Man to date. He nails everything about the character. He’s smart, he’s quippy, and he never gives up. Misty Lee was fun as Aunt May. RDJ is still awesome as Iron Man, no surprises there. There’s a couple of side characters that were fun, but I think one played by a girl named... Zendaya? The hell? Is that her real name? Is that her only name? Whatever, she shows up and has some funny moments, but as time went on and she started randomly showing up more I started getting really bothered by her to a point that she became more annoying than funny.
You know how people tend to complain about Marvel never having memorable or interesting villains since Loki or Ultron. Well that can finally stop thanks to Michael Keaton’s performance as Adrian Toomes aka the Vulture. Vulture was an awesome villain. Funny how this was once the guy who played Batman two decades ago. I guess Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight was right. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
I like how down to earth Vulture actually is. He’s not somebody who’s out to get revenge or a superpowered being. No, he’s just a guy who got screwed over in life and now he’s just doing what needs to be done to provide for his family. That’s what makes Spidey’s villains stand out, you can sympathize for them. Also his overall look is pretty badass.
I should also mention that this is the funniest Spider-Man movie to date. So many funny jokes and so many good quips. I thought I was going to die laughing. The writing was great. Actually there was even one great twist in the movie that I did not see coming and it made me scream, “OH SHIT!” right in the middle of the movie and the audience was laughing pretty hard at that.
The action is pretty cool. You feel the intensity of what Spider-Man is going through when he’s trying to save people and fight the bad guy. However I will say that one down side is that some of the action, specifically the one in the climax, didn’t quite feel as epic as compared to the last several films. That’s kinda a bummer.
Also I couldn’t help but be a Spider-Man purist while watching the movie. There’s a guy named Flash Thompson in the movie, and anyone who knows who that character is he’s Parker’s bully from high school. To make my point in this film he’s some prep student that’s also smart and has a huge rivalry with Peter. I’m was like, is that suppose to be Flash? No that can’t be. Flash is a jock, not a joke.
And there’s this high school girl named Betty Brant. Like Daily Bugle secretary Betty Brant? WTF? And I have to ask: where’s Mary Jane? Where’s Harry Osborn? Where’s Norman Osborn? Where’s OsCorp? Where’s Uncle Ben? Oh wait he’s dead. Never mind.
Come on, I know Sony has a bunch of sticks up their asses but they gotta let loose some characters that we know and love.
Overall, this was a fun movie and a great addition to the MCU. This film was definitely made for you Marvel fans. I highly recommend checking this one out.
