It's been a minute since I've had thoughts that I'd wish to express on paper. Lately though, tons of thoughts have been swirling about excitedly around in my head like an 1980's suburban middle class white woman who accidently walked in a clearance sale at Costco's. I've been thinking about all the recent events that has occurred lately. Covid-19, mass unempolyment, the taking down of confederate statues, and the Black Lives Matter protest that have occured in the wake of George Floyd's death. Most importantly though, I've been thinking about how their all connected.
America. 2020 has exposed the horrible intersection of your broken healthcare sysytem, your classist and racist two tiered justice system, and the fragility of your economy. Many thought your economy was somewhat stable, but it turns out that your economy was more fragile than a glass vase being thrown off the roof of a 20 storied building. America, you could not save the more than a quarter of a million people who have already died of Covid-19. You could not give peace of mind to the millions of people who have lost their jobs as a result of this pandemic. You could not protect George Floyd or Eric Garner, or Tamir Rice, or Breonna Taylor, or Sandra Bland or the countless number of people who died as a result of police brutality. In fact, many of their killers still have a badge and a gun. America. 2020 has taught us the one thing you wanted us to never find out. You can't protect your citizens. Not from pandemics, Not from an economic crisis. Not from police brutality or civil unrest. And you certainly can't protect them when all of them are occuring at once. No, you are far too concerned about the foundations of your free market fundamentalism and the sensibilities of the profesional managerial class. Now they want change. And their going to get it.
