Stoicism and minimalism
I was raised in a Christian household, but the teachings of stoicism and minimalism are what stuck with me. Stoicism taught me many important lessons. One of the most important lessons is self-control. It's not just about saying "no" to eating 50 donuts or getting to bed at a decent hour. It taught me that I have much more control over my life than I realized. That I can achieve something if I am willing to put in the effort and step outside my comfort zone. It also taught me to accept failure. That I can't always control the outcome, but I can control myself.
Minimalism taught me that you are not only as valuable as the stuff you buy and that you don't have live by everyone else's standards. Another important axiom is that 'in many ways, our society is too materialistic and in other ways not materialistic enough.' We're too materialistic in the sense that we buy things all the time and the more expensive something is "it must be more important." And we're not materialistic enough in the sense that we through things out instead of fixing it. We don't have family heirlooms anymore. We just have lots of stuff that we care very little for, instead of having a few things that mean a lot to us.
