It Starts With You
Before we can drive out the darkness in our world, we must drive it out of ourselves- and that takes work. The light, at least in this scenario, is brutal self-honesty, a quality that in my opinion, lends itself naturally to empathy and understanding, though it may take some time to get there. It is hard to hate that which you are willing to understand and I fully believe that understanding is at the root of love.
To drive out darkness, you must first acknowledge its existence. The only way to clean up a mess is to be willing to dive into it. New age circles speak frequently of the "shadow self", the part of yourself that is deeply flawed, ruled by primal instinct and the wounded inner child. This part of yourself will never go away, but it yearns to be seen, to be recognized. Addressing the shadow self is the only way to gain control over it.
Like our inner world, the world around us has its share of light and dark. Darkness will always exist as that is the dichotomy of life, but once someone has learned to turn a discerning eye on the darkness within themselves, they are better equipped to recognize it in other situations and work to change it in truly beneficial way. Goodwill perpetuated by ignorance is unhelpful, as that line about the road to hell outlines pretty clearly.
My goal is to help encourage and guide others to reckon with the shadow side of themselves so that they can walk through life with less ignorance and more clarity. I try to regularly revisit this side of myself, as I am a work in progress, just like anyone else. The journey never stops, we just get a little further each time.
