Chapter Three Ruby
“After EagleEye’s done with you, you will be.” If that’s not terrifying what is? What does EagleEye do that’ll make me a soldier? I was very much not a soldier as it is! But whether I wanted to or not I knew that I should. So I guess I was doing it. I showed up at the GTS or Guerilla Tactics School and saw the girl that was sitting alone in the bar. Now she was wearing padded armor and those gloves that are made for people to punch. She had black hair and a square face, She looked like she could glare at a bullet and it would back down.
“Um, are you EagleEye?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said, she had a strong Russian accent, “are you the rookie?”
“Yep,” I responded, “So, what are you going to teach me fir…”
“Stop slouching and acting so casual.” She said.
“What?” I asked, standing up straight.
“I am not your friend I am your instructor. Don’t talk to me as if I’m your friend.”
“Oh uh I just thought, you know, we are in the same squad so…”
“No, we are not! Not yet,”
“First, attack me.” She said holding up her gloved hands.
“Ok,” I said I stretched and got ready when she punched me in the gut. I doubled over and barely gasped out “What the heck?”
“I’m sorry, did you think ADVENT would just let you strike?” She responded., “Be faster.”
I got up and punched her right arm, as I did she used her left hand to punch me in the side. I stumbled to the right. I gritted my teeth and leaped at her trying to punch her in the face. She dodged and hooked me in the stomach. She kicked me in the chest and knocked my breath out of my lungs. I lay on the floor trying to breathe.
“If this was real you would be dead.” She said.
“You suck…” I managed to say.
“As I said, I am not your friend.”
“Hey EageEye, why don’t I teach her how to shoot?” I heard a new voice that had a Spanish accent.
I looked to the side and saw another guy in the squad. He had long black hair and a darker skin tone. His face was long and he was well-built. (Everyone was well-built or buff) and a little drone was flying above him.
“Fine,” EagleEye said.
“Let's go new guy,” He said.
I got up and followed him. The walk was painfully long. On the way there we passed through the engineering facility. Where I heard a familiar voice.
“Rover, no!” It yelled.
“Why do I recognize that voice?” I asked.
“That's Lilly,” The guy who saved me said, “She’s our chief engineer.”
“Oh yeah!” I remembered the first XCOM person I talked to.
“You can talk to her after we are done training,” He said.
We made it to the shooting range where he asked:
“Have you ever shotten a gun before?”
“Yes sir,” I said.
“I know EagleEye likes you being all business but you can chill around me.” He said, “Just call me Tinker or Tink.”
“So try shooting this.” He said handing me an assault rifle.
I took it and attempted to shoot the closest target. I hit the target but just barely.
“It’s a start,” Tinker said, then he held out an SMG “Try this.”
It was easier to shoot the SMG because it was lighter the problem was that it was more inaccurate.
“Hmm,” Tinker said, “Can I see that?”
I handed him the gun and he started to teach me how to shoot. While we were talking another guy came in. He was buff, I prayed that he wasn't like EagleEye! He towered over both of us. He had a stubble of a goatee.
“That baby gun will barely scratch ADVENT troops,” He said in a French accent, “Try this.”
He handed me a minigun. I picked it up but it immediately pulled me down. The guy laughed at me. I heaved the gun up to my waist and shot it. I missed every shot. The guy started laughing more.
“You know Rhino,” Tinker said, “When I took the SMG I got twice as many kills as you.”
“Whatever.” Rhino said, “Don’t worry new guy, to use a minigun requires lots of training so if you can’t shoot it no worries.”
“Thanks, I guess,” I said.
Rhino left the room and Tinker continued instructing me on how to shoot the SMG.
