AVATAR 2: HERE’S WHY JAMES CAMERON’S FILM IS NOT A HIT IN JAPAN
When Avatar was released in cinemas, James Cameron had revolutionized special effects and 3D. For his sequel, the director has decided to continue to bet on new technologies to immerse the viewer even more in the world of Pandora. Except that some cinemas are having problems showing this blockbuster .
A MIXED SUCCESS IN THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN
If Avatar 2 is a hit at the global box office , success is more timid among our Japanese friends. This is not for a cultural reason, but because of technical problems that some Japanese cinemas encounter when showing the film .
Indeed, Avatar: The Way of Water seems to be too technically sophisticated as reported by the Bloomberg site . It must be said that James Cameron has relied on many new technologies to offer a unique cinema experience to spectators . Except that in Japan, some theaters are not yet equipped to support these technologies.
As a reminder, just like Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, Avatar 2 uses High Frame Rate (HFR) technology, i.e. an increase in image scrolling thanks to the projection of the film at 48 frames per second against 24 frames per second normally. A technology which thus offers better comfort during viewing and which notably reduces the jerking effect for 3D films. But this process also has a drawback: some spectators, accustomed to films in 24 frames per second, have experienced undesirable visual effects known as the "soap opera effect".
To overcome this, Cameron decided to use TrueCut Motion technology to switch between the two formats . Thus, for more static scenes, the standard format is retained while for more dynamic scenes, it goes through the HFR.

A PRODUCTION THAT IS TOO TECHNOLOGICALLY DEMANDING
And this is where the problem arises: not all theaters are equipped for HFR. Many imagine that Japan is technologically ahead in the field of cinema. Except that the technical evolution of the Japanese rooms is slower than in Europe or in the United States specifies Bloomberg .
For the time being, neither Disney nor Japanese theaters have commented on the technical problems encountered with Avatar 2 . However, a cinema in Nagoya explained that in view of this concern, it decided to broadcast the film at the normal frame rate and not in 48 frames per second . And it is most certainly this alternation between the two frame rates that causes major crashes in Japanese dark rooms . To broadcast this type of production with this technology, it is essential to be equipped with a second generation digital projector.
