"When it's gone, you'll know what a gift love was."
Ian McEwan, Enduring Love.
Prose or poetry.
You Will Know
When you walk
In the unrelenting furnace
Of an unending desert,
With lips so cracked
And a throat so dusty
That it hurts to swallow,
While alone you wallow
In sun-baked misery,
You will know truly
What a gift it was
When you could turn on the tap
And get a cool glass of
Water.
You will know finally
What a mistake it was
To pursue a pipe dream
And throw away a good job and
Home.
You will know fully
When it’s gone
What a gift it was
That you took for granted: my
Love.
