Ode to Richard
What would it be like
If we went flat broke-
Lost our house, and our cars
Our dinners out and our shows
We’d have no pool service or house cleaner
No cable or phones
No highlights or birtchbox or manicured toes
We’d be left with what looks like
One of my happiest times
Eviction notice and Pawn shops
When I was on Cloud 9
Ramen noodles and five channels
Counting change
Sitting in your front seat
How weird what was strange
Having been in the background
You were finally mine
The novelty of knowing
A reciprocation of kind
The whole world was against us
Wanting us to fail
Turned backs and shadows
That disapproving chill
We closed the door and sat in the glow
Rabbit ears providing
The Jerry springer show
The square feet didn’t matter
While you were in that space
I went to the dark side
For your smile and your voice
The richness that fills me
That I could never replace
Is your laughter at my jokes
And the direction of your gaze
When I fell for you
I didn’t dream of a house
A white picket fence or a fancy night out
I didn’t think about cars
Or the pool we would have
I just wanted to be given
To you by my Dad
The promise you made
While we were sitting in the car
At Robertson park
Seemed hopeless and far
I didn’t believe you, but didn’t have the heart to say
There’s no way on earth
It could work out this way
But I’d just felt your hug
For the very first time
And I wasn’t done memorizing
My heart against my mind
I’d always choose the latter
But that’s when you said
The promise I didn’t believe
But I just nodded my head
“You’ll wear a white dress
And your Dad will give you away”
The thought was absurd
That would be the day.
I made my decision to ignore my mind
We’d look for treasure without a map
I didn’t care what we’d find
I’d rather walk circles with you
Lost in the woods
I’ll follow you blind
I always would
But look where you’ve brought me
Your promises kept
Making my life better
Than I had right to expect
So what would it be like
If we went flat broke?
Worst case scenario
I think we would float
We’d roll our sleeves up
And get to the grind
That’s adventure; this yours and mine
You can say you married up
But I smile, I know the truth
I'm happy to roll a blunt
And ride the 610 Loop
