Trust
I bet you were
a eager puppy
always pulling at
your mama’s teat
elbowing your mates
you’re gangly and needy like that
the memory of milk fresh
watching you lying here
by my chair, I know
you dream of it still
I hear you making little
suckling noises in your sleep
feet twitching
pink lips quivering
it feels like trust
your vulnerability exposed
outside your pack, yet
feeling safe
so near another
not your kind—but
we have a pact now,
you and me.
