A Secret Revealed.
The wind that picked up the leaves were blocked out of the house by the sturdy window. The wind started to howl, but no one seemed to care. We all just sat around the table, eating turkey, stuffing, beets, ham, yeast rolls, mashed potatoes, and green beans. As I took a bite of my grandmother's home made stuffing, my father said, "So, mom, how are you?"
"I'm doing okay I guess. I'm just glad you guys came out here. You guys seem to be really busy with your jobs. What did you do for a living again, Fred?"
"Oh I work at an international business as a office lackey, but the pay and benefits are great. Just recently I got a promo-"
"No...", grandma stated hesitantly while looking at me, "I thought you worked for the military."
"No, mom, I gave that up to spend time with my son."
My father looked over at me and smiled. He reached his arm over and punched my shoulder.
"I had a really weird dream last night. Would you like to hear it? Well you see, I had a dream that Fred was working for the CIA and..."
"MOM! Not right now! He doesn't need to know!"
"But Freddy, he hast to know".
My father turned back to me and carefully said, "Son. You know that I work at an international business, but that business is actually for the CIA. In fact everyone here has worked for the CIA at one point during there lives. Me, your mother, your grandmother, and your grandfather all worked for the CIA. Even your sister, Melanie, is working for the CIA. That's why she couldn't make it."
"I already knew that you worked for the CIA, dad"
"HOW?!?!?"
"For a spy you really can't keep a secret. Do you remember last Christmas?"
"Of course I do"
"Well you drank a lot of eggnog and spilled out all of your secrets to us. Mom didn't really looked shocked, but she also drank a few glasses of eggnog"
"No... I... Did I?"
Mom looked over at my father and said, "I didn't want you to find out this way, but yes you did get drunk and tell everyone your secrets"
"But I tried so hard this time not to drink so much eggnog. I mean, sure. Yes, I do have am addiction to eggnog, but I didn't think I drank so much"
"It's okay, dad! I know you enjoy eggnog and yes, I did learn that you worked for the CIA on Christmas night. We can get through this together!"
"Thank you all. I'm thankful that we all can be here to eat a meal together"
