Something More
"Don't you think there's something… I dunno. Bigger?"
"Nah, dude. You high? We born in this world as crack babies and we leave it the same way."
I stared out over the sewage canal, where the stars were reflecting dimly off the murky water. It was probably the prettiest thing we had in the city.
I shrugged. "Nah. I ain't high. Not this time… But, don't you ever want to do something with your life? Get rich? Live the high life?"
"Sure man. I s'pose so. Not like we ever can though. We ain't never meant to get out this town." He was stopped by the sound of a gun shot in the distance. "We just meant to stay in this town our whole life and just make it to death."
"But I don't want to do that, man. I wanna mean somethin' to people. I want to take control of my life and actually do something." The always present odor of the sewage was winding around us, almost visible since we were so close to the source. "I dunno… there's gotta be something more than this. There's just gotta be…"
"I don't like to think about this kinda stuff, man. I ain't smart enough too." He rose to his knees and brushed off his pants. "Let's go see if we can find some booze or somethin'. Polly be good for you, man."
I licked my lips before standing up as well. "Yeah… I guess it could."
