Excerpt from a novel in progress
Ryker wailed as his father was taken to the government car with bound hands. Hopelessly his older twin sisters cooed and tried to soothe the toddler while holding back cries of their own. Their mother was no comfort for the three children, she stood there frozen and devastated, she could do nothing to save her beloved husband and nothing to calm her horrified children. Nadina couldn’t believe what was happening and was still trying to process what her husband had whispered into her ear, hiding the words by the veil of her long blonde hair as he gave her one last hug.
“Our children are more special than you know, protect them, I love you all.” Enoch’s deep voice echoed inside her mind, she knew what he meant but didn’t want to believe her children were in danger now as well. The family watched as the black sedan disappeared through the neighbourhood, a few moments after it was no longer in sight Enya took her baby brother inside the house to settle him. As Enya did this, Naiya attempted to convince her mother to go in as well, but it was pointless she just stood, staring down the street like she was waiting for her husband to suddenly come back home. Naiya eventually gave up and decided to leave, but as she turned away her mother finally broke.
“We aren’t safe here anymore.” Nadina whispered so quietly that her daughter struggled to hear her. She looked down into the young girls’ face which was a mirror of her own and went on in her soft musical voice. “We aren’t safe here anymore darling, they’re going to come back again soon and test you and your sister again now that you’ve come of age. Do you understand what I’m saying darling?”
“But momma we aren’t special like daddy is so we don’t have to worry about that, right?”
