Devin McClain-Ch 1
It was all over the news. Summer City's golden boy was dead - the result of a car accident. Summer high had lost its most valuable player; the summer high football coach had lost his only son.
"What are your thoughts? Do you really think it was an accident?" A local reporter had asked.
"What the hell do you mean what are my thoughts?" Arnold McClain exploded, never responding to the second question. Truth be told, he had his theories about Devin's death, including the possibility of murder. But he kept this little insight to himself.
The news of Devin's death had reached everyone's ears long before it had hit the papers - reactions varied. Some rejoiced - Devin had been a source of pain to several individuals and his death, to them, was a cause for celebration. But for most, this was no joyful event. He had led the football team to many victories, and had won over the hearts of many people. Two of these hearts happened to be those of Amber Wilks and Mckenzie
Prince. Mckenzie Prince was Summer City's golden girl. Amber had always been the wannabe - she was always climbing the rope of popularity but never quite got to experience the sensation of getting all the way to the top. Perhaps that was a blessing in disguise. "Popularity isn't all it's cut out to be," Mckenzie always seemed to say "Amber's a fool if she thinks living this life is easy."
Still, Amber had won over Devin and stolen him from Mckenzie. And although they had been together for seven and a half months (having reached the half mark of the eighth month on the day of the accident) Devin's death never truly seemed to affect Amber in the way it affected Mckenzie. And perhaps this was because Devin had been Mckenzie's much longer than he had been anyone else's.
