Ground
We met in a coffee house
When I caught your eye for the first time
Something about the smell of it made me ache
The dull chocolate depth of the earth
Encased in heaping burlap sacks
Your eyes are brown and beautiful
The forgiving soil under my feet
Your skin tastes like sun and suffering
We stared at the river for hours
Sometimes people need that,
To gaze into the deception of a body
That could easily wash them away
Sometimes we need to feel small
Your hands enclosed a rock
Round and god-like
The faint fluttering life in your fingertips
Gently offer worship in steady waves
We climb trees
To be closer to books
We learn to enjoy
Simple things
We love reluctantly
Distrustfully
Pain in every step
Fearful
Flinching
Tail tucked
Tongue flicking
Submissive
We do our best and that seems to keep us afloat
So we can drift for now
