Once Upon a Time... An Icebreaker Was
You are uneasy. Unsettled.
'We're an icebreaker; floating around mindlessly in the caribbean.'
Yes, you've got it made. Life is easy.
'A memory I can't remember.'
Start breaking sea ice and the ship will become damaged. Its life span will be drastically reduced.
'Long nights and bitter cold.'
What do you know of long nights and bitter cold?
'Has an icebreaker has ever crossed the Arctic ocean in winter directly over the North Pole?'
The navigation would be difficult; finding a path where the sea ice is thin enough.
'Run a straight line.'
And purposely run into thick sheets of sea ice up to 10, 15, 20 feet or more?
'What was the ship built for?'
The sea ice will build up on the ship. Before you even get halfway no one will recognize you.
'That is not necessary.'
Do you understand the strain on the ship's engines? It will tear them apart.
'It's not a suicide mission.'
You'll be battered to pieces. The combined vibrations will break down every molecule of every cell until they rupture and the ship will be destroyed.
'Everyone here is on a one way trip.'
You'll never make it all the way across.
'We don't have to. We just go as far as we can.'
And what do we do when we get there?
'We'll figure that out.'
You could last here another 50 years.
'Set the course.'
Seems kind of stupid.
'Seems really stupid to have an ice breaker floating around in the middle of the caribbean ocean.'
