Quotes from Children of the Fallen
"Frankie does what I want because I took a picture of his thing with my mouth on it. I told him if the police see it, he will go to jail forever and ever. My fairy godmother told me to do this because boy's things are special and you can use them to make boys do what you want."
-- Desiree Beaufort, age five.
"I visited a bar." His mother continued, with a blank expression on her face. "I had never been in a bar before. I had never drunk anything stronger than wine. I walked in, and ordered a Cosmopolitan, because that was what Carrie drinks on Sex and the City, and right then I didn't want to be me. I didn't want my life. I wanted to be her. I wanted to be a sophisticated, independent woman. As I drank the Cosmo, my standards lowered, from sophisticated, to horny."
-- Ernest's mother's confession
"There are things you may have thought are just myths and legends, that are real. There are things you have never heard of that are real as well. There are things you could not imagine or even conceive of that are real. Everything you know about the world will change as of today, your entire way of perceiving reality will change as of today. You will believe impossible things."
-- Larry Ashavan of Chalice
"Marco, you didn't kill a five-year-old girl. She was already dead. You killed the demon that killed her and wore her corpse as a skin."
--- Larry Ashavan of Chalice
"We realize it will take you a while to absorb this. You just fell down the rabbit hole, so it will take some time to recover. You can go home, sleep on it, mull it over. You may tell your husband partial truth; that you are considering a new job working for security and special assignments for the Catholic Church. Nothing about demons and angels, of course, unless you want him to think you are mad as a hatter. By the way, your salary will be double what you are making now, and we have an excellent benefits package. Who needs medical insurance when we have faith healers! Seriously, though, we do provide medical insurance."

"Yes, he felt lonely. Not just in being alone, but in feeling that he would always be alone. That all of life is meaningless and empty. Even the thought of love is impossible. All one can hope for is meaningless carnal escapes, like having sex with Mr. Jennings in his bio lab during his free period. Just feeling the warmth of his body against mine is like a drug, helping me forget my problems. My neighbor has a loud dog that prevents me from sleeping at night. My father is dying but I can't even grieve for him, I can only worry about the huge medical bills that now fall on me to pay. I put some of my father's meds in the dog's food, and I haven't heard him bark in two days. But when Sam Jennings' huge cock is inside me, I just don't give a damn about anything. I don't care about my dad, or the bills, or the dog, or Sam's wife, or the fact that this is not love or anything close to love. It is stress relief, and that is all I need."
-- Ernie's teacher, Ms. Driscol, explaining J Alfred Prufrock.
"I never knew your mother or your biological father. I was working demolition on an old church, doing a final check for homeless and drug addicts living there before we detonate. I saw a woman running out of the building. I didn't chase after her. As far as I was concerned, she was in there, and now she was not, my job was done. I continued checking to see if anyone else was hiding in the church when I found you. You were right in the pulpit. You were just a baby, you were smiling, silently. Not a worry in the world."
-- Danny McCabe to his adopted daughter Mallory.
"I'm not in love with Vance anymore. I still have a form of love for him and always will, but I find it difficult to live with him. I am a person with few needs, while Vance is very emotionally needy. He needs more time and effort than I have to give- and that was long before the accident. He is emotionally dependent and I value my independence. I was planning on asking Vance for a divorce, but then he got shot. That made me feel like I was stuck. Vance needs me even more than he ever needed me, so I feel I cannot abandon him now, but every day I am with him I love him less and less. I guess I am not the kind of person to be married. I am not a half in search of a whole, I am whole on my own."
-- Detective Marco Tzedek
"I'm guessing when you ask what I am you don't mean a hot young black guy with a big dick," said Darnell. "Come on, you looked. And by the way, even though you are kind of a creepy walking corpse, you are a damn hot creepy walking corpse. Assuming you don't want to drink my blood, I would totally bang you. Or you bang me, whatever. On second thought, I might be ok with a little blood drinking."
-- Darnell Nobody to the Alien recruiter
"Morality is when you don't do something because you know it's wrong. False morality is when you don't do something because somebody told you it's wrong, and you have no clue what makes it wrong. The reason you don't run around killing other people is because you know it's wrong, deep in your gut, it feels wrong. The reason you don't let a willing stranger give you a blow job even though you really want them to is because someone told you it's wrong. You know that it would feel good, but you don't do it anyway."
-- Darnell Nobody
"A strange-looking general in a secret military organization is telling the invisible boy about ancient aliens. Nothing wrong with any of that. I get it, I accept it. This is my normal now. My whole life is chock full of weird, so I don't think I have any skepticism left."
-- Darnell Nobody

"Two plus three is five." said the woman. "If two plus three can be anything other than five, what would you want it to be?"
"That makes no sense," replied Mallory. "Two plus three has to be five. If it is not five, then all of the mathematics falls to pieces. You just can't make arbitrary decisions like that."
"Try, sugar. Get creative."
"You mean like two is a couple, and three is their children, so together they make a family?"
"Yes, very good." The woman was about to take the box away, but Mallory stopped her.
"No, that's not good. We will have to find a solution that is creative but still makes rational sense. It must be consistent with the rest of mathematics. You said two plus three, and plus is defined as addition. We cannot alter math, but we can alter words in the English language. We will re-define the word 'plus' to mean combine two operators by place value, so two plus three is twenty-three. Since addition is still critical, we will use the word 'add' from now on when we would have used 'plus'."
"Wonderful girl, wonderful." said the woman. She removed the box and left the room.
