5+ Tips on How to Take a Break from Your Writing
Being a writer is not always as glamorous as people assume and comes with its own set of challenges. If you are a writer, you know exactly what I am talking about. There comes a point when you just cannot come up with any new ideas and hit a roadblock. At times like these, it might be a good idea to take a break and refresh your mind. Here are some tips you can apply if you struggle to take breaks.
1. Go for a walk
It may seem obvious, but sometimes we need to be reminded of this. Getting some fresh air and being active is enough to refuel your brain for when you start writing again. Take an hour off from your writing and go for a long walk out in nature. Walking on a treadmill at home is not going to have the same effect as getting out of the house.
2. Hang out with a good friend
We become so reclus as writers that we sometimes neglect our friends and families. Call up one of your friends who can make you laugh or just have a good conversation with. Don’t think about your writing at this point and just be present in the moment. Let your stresses go and make this a time of fun and enjoyment.
3. Write in your journal
Writing a reflective journal is important for writers, because you want to get all your thoughts on paper. A reflective journal is going to help you write without the stress of a deadline, as this is just informal writing that benefits only you. When you write your thoughts down, see it as emptying your brain and making space for new ideas and more inspiration.
4. Do something creative
When I say this, I do not mean that you should choose writing as your creative activity. Sometimes when I have writer’s block, I pick up a coloring book and go to town with it. It may seem crazy for a grown person to color a book, but this is creative, requires focus and gets me out of my own head. You can choose any craft you want to as long as you enjoy it.
This is the big one, because meditation has so many benefits and is a great way to take a break from writing. Quieting your mind is important as a writer, as we always have something going on in our brains. Take a few minutes to meditate every day and you will soon see how wonderfully it effects your creativity.
6. Do nothing
I don’t know about you, but I always feel guilty when I am just lazing around and do nothing. However, sometimes it is important to do that. Watch some useless television program or go on YouTube and check out some hilarious videos. Of course, you could just lay on the couch and daydream. Whatever it is, do as little work as possible.
Taking breaks is important for most people and we have heard this in school a lot. When your brain is full, there is no room for new information to enter. This can curb your creativity and inspiration. Make sure you take ample breaks as a writer and you will soon see that this is a positive addition to your life.
