"Will you guys remember me next summer?" I asked, staring up into the cloudy sky. The grass tickled my fingertips and the wind rustled my hair.
It was the last day of summer before we went into high school. 'We' being my small group of friends. We all knew that high school made a different person out of us, brought out our worst qualities. High school rips you into shreds.
I felt Ashton tense up next to me as he said, "We could never forget you, May. Why would you think that?" I turned my head to look at him, mesmerized in his ocean eyes.
"It's high school; where reality comes and punches you in the face. I know we will all separate and find new friends."
"You're right," Kayla sighed. "We will find new friends, new groups. But that doesn't mean we will forget you. Or anyone here."
"You're not a very forgettable person, May," added Ben.
I smiled into the sky as Kayla reached over and intertwined her fingers with mine. "We may not always be bff's, but we will always keep in touch. I swear."
I closed my eyes, sighing. "I love you guys." It wasn't meant in a relationship way, but I felt as if my life was tethered with theirs. We've all had a rollercoaster of a summer, one to remember for a lifetime. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
