Lest We Forget - Chapter 2
It happened so fast. I wasn't even sure if what was happening around me was real. I could hear nothing, just the loud, echoing, constant ringing in my head, in my mind. The only action I sought out to do was lift the piece of wall off of me, before the second shell blows us all to bits.
With adrenaline fueling me, I heave it off of my chest and get up, running anywhere I could go. My squad-mates do the same, but I didn't have much time to worry about them now. All I could do is focus on getting the bloody hell out of that building. An open gap in the wall catches my eye, and I leap through it, followed by my men. Just after tumbling into the dirt in an ally to the side of the building, the tank fires its second shell into the building, shattering its foundation. All that’s left is a pile of sandstone dust and bricks.
Realizing we aren't in the rubble, the Tiger rolls backwards to look into the aly. We jump up as fast as our bodies are able, and sprint for the end of the tunnel. The tank’s MG turns towards us and opens fire. The array of bullets spray the wall to our left, barely piercing Lt Scott’s shoulder. Our group darts out of the aly and into another, until the mechanical whirring of the tank’s treads are faint in the distance.
“The Lieutenant needs med attention!”
I yell out with the little voice I have. We keep sprinting through allies, taking each turn fearing that the barrel of another tiger would wait for us at the end.
“I thought those damn jerry were at least t two days behind us! How did they catch up this fast!?” Robert called back to me.
“I have no clue, but we need to lose them!”
I answered, out of breath.
We came through one last aly and into the edge of town, and open desert. Laying down with everyone else behind a sand dune, I take out my binoculars and scan the abandoned town. Several Tigers and a couple Panzers roam the empty streets, along with armoured Afrika Corp trucks and jeeps.
In the distance a shape appears in the sky, closer and closer. Slowly, the sound of a loud wirrrrrrrrrrrr of a propeller fills our ears, and the shape of a US B-17 Bomber is visible in the blue sky. The whole town, including everyone in it, was going to be dust soon, and it wasn't just the Nazis, it was us too.
Hope you guys enjoy Chapter 2, more coming soon!
