Lest We Forget - Chapter 3
The German Afrika Korps quickly turned their attention to the B17 and its squad of Spitfires. As hastily as they could, they loaded their Flak guns and rotated them up into the sky.
“ÖFFNEN FEUER!” The Anti-Aircraft guns blazed as they opened fire, filling the air around the planes with balls of fire.
Half of the Spitfires veered away and headed for the Flak guns, mowing them with rounds of Browning 20mm death. After spraying once, they turned around and headed back down, raining fire on the Flaks once more.
With their Anti-Air now under risk, the Korps fired at the swooping Spitfires. A shell hit one, sending its smoking frame straight toward where we were standing, watching the action in the sky. As soon as we realized what was happening, the smoking spitfire slammed into the bottom of the sandhill we were standing ontop of, sending us flying to the bottom. Sand and smoke were sent everywhere, blinding and watering our eyes, filling our lungs with smoke.
Meanwhile, more and more spitfires were being downed, until the only ones remaining were 5 planes left escorting the incoming bomber. But before the Germans’ Flak guns could bring it onto a fireball, the faint sound of a whistling descent filled the air, growing louder the closer it got to the ground.
I turned to my men as they were recovering from the smoke and sand.
“HIT THE DECK!”
We jumped into the sand and put our hands over our head as the whistling sound grew louder and louder, and the sounds of words yelled in German also filled the air.
Then the whistling ceased, replaced with a deafening boom so loud it shook the grains of sand we were laying on. Even our hands over our ears couldn't stop the sound from entering our ears, it vibrated everything. The town was replaced with an enormous fireball and contrails of smoke. The smokey contrails shot upwards into the pale sky, and rained down rocks and dust of debris onto our cowering group in the sand.
The B17 flew above us, casting its huge shadow on the hill before it soared away with the remaining Spitfires.
