Farewell to Childhood.
Where did it go,
the memories, of times
paddling in rock-pools
and nursery rhymes -
playing tag with the wind,
on a sunlit beach.
I chased the waves -
sometimes,
out of reach.
Where did it go,
the donkey rides,
the soft sand-dunes
the places to hide.
The gifts from the sea -
the cowrie shells,
starfish and seaweed,
the salt-sea smells.
Where did they all go,
the near and dear,
the places we knew,
yet memories, still clear.
The memory of summertime
on the old garden fence,
honeysuckle and roses,
the mingling of scents.
Where did it all go -
the innocence,
the slow pace of life,
when we were small friends -
cycling round villages,
on our old tin bikes,
apple scrumping,
and going on hikes.
We searched the hedgerows
for blackberries, sweet,
our lips- tell-tale purple,
the world,
at our feet.
