Madelyn got a text from her best friend, Rose. "Can you please come over?"
She was befuddled. Usually, Rose would start a conversation with her. It would eventually end hours or minutes later, satisfying the both.
Now, she was extremely vague and to-the-point. It confused her and she wondered what was wrong.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
It took minutes, but then Rose responded. Vaguely, "Just.. Please come over."
Madelyn was even more confused, but more than that, she started to reason what was the matter. Because she was a friend, and had nothing to do, she packed her things and left.
It was a Saturday. A day in which everyone stayed at home and did nothing. It was just that kind of day.
Madelyn was tired after doing her weekend errands on Saturday. At the time Rose texted her, she was just lying on her bed. Doing nothing.
On the other hand, Rose was unsatisfactory. She was terrified.
She was sitting in a corner of the house. She wasn't dirty; by all means, she was clean. The shower didn't help.
She had been thinking of Madelyn, her only friend. She had no other friends, for others ostracized her. Because that's what society does.
They had been friends for 2 years. They told another everything, they comforted another and they compliment each other's personality. They were perfect and nothing else.
But, she also started to wonder more about her. So much, it happened frequently. She wouldn't endure without the thought that maybe she was feeling something different.
For her? No, it couldn't be.
But it's not that story.
She put up her legs and became a ball. She couldn't think, because she didn't know what to do. She sniffled.
Madelyn knocked on the door. Once. Twice. Three times. "Are you there?"
But Rose couldn't speak.
She then tried the handle. To question, it was unlocked. She went in.
She went through the kitchen and living room. Rose was still quiet. She then went to the bathroom. Rose wasn't there.
Rose then quietly spoke, "I'm here." As still as it was, Madelyn heard the hushed sound and followed it.
She went to the bedroom. At the door, she spotted the closet door ajar. She spied through the opening and found her, still in a ball. She sat down next to her.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
Rose didn't budge. Madelyn was surprised, but remained strong. She began to pet Rose's head, not as a pet but as a way to calm her down.
Rose reacted calmly to the gesture, feeling better after a few seconds. After a minute, she relaxed and sat straight, knowing that it wasn't, in any way, dehumanizing.
"Rose, what's wrong? I got your text." Madelyn asked.
Rose looked the other way, afraid of her response. Then, she said softly, "I honestly don't know."
"Lately, I'm starting to think more and more about you. I don't know why or what is happening. I don't know, honest! I swear!"
"What do you mean 'think' about me?" Madelyn responded.
"I'm thinking about you differently, like more than a friend. I'm starting to feel different. I, I, I don't know what's happening to me..." She started to sob and regress.
Madelyn comforted her, although she had nothing to say.
She started to process this. Rose said she was starting to think and feel differently towards her, but she didn't know what this meant. Sexuality? But, she also felt empathetic towards her.
Madelyn quickly turned Rose around and hugged her. Rose instantly gasped, a fish out of water. She went limp, while Madelyn tightly held her. She then shed a tear, closed her eyes and hugged back. She rested her chin on her shoulder.
The two then let go. But then, Rose gently put her hands on Madelyn's face and stared into her hazel eyes, wondrously.
Their space then slowly diminished, as Rose kissed Madelyn. Madelyn did not know how to react. It was her friend of 2 years kissing her, not a man. Her eyes showed refrain from pushing Rose away. She had never kissed a girl before.
But, then, it was somewhere down deep in heart, she knew this would happen. She could only know at the last minute. Rose loved her, this was obvious. More than a friend.
Madelyn closed her eyes. It was better that way. They stayed like that for a minute, both complimenting another.
Then, everything went normal. Rose let out a quick, little sigh and Madelyn smiled a little bit. They were both relieved.
"Are you ok?" Madelyn asked.
Rose sighed again. "Yeah. I'm fine." Both smiled at each other.
Then, Madelyn said she had to leave. Rose was sad, but also glad to have it off her chest. Something that could never be replaced.
Madelyn gave a quick kiss on the cheek as Rose smiled. They exchanged no words. Madelyn left.
Just as Madelyn exited, Rose unlocked her phone.
She received the text from her a minute later. "Thank you."
Madelyn smiled. "You're welcome."
