It works by an advanced 'electric pad' that reads a person's brain activity connected wirelessly to a receiver (computer, watch, anything that can use Lucy). It is represented by 'a couple of weird symbols, with dashes, lines and dots'. Apparently, it is unknown as to the difficulty of learning it, as it is universal for every language on the planet due to the billions and billions of symbols for every language. Yet, there are computers that regularly transcribe Lucy and, with the help of manual input and software updates, Lucy has become more universal. The name originates from the titular character from Elfen Lied.
Ayanami - A cylindrical mode of transportation in its experimental state. We don't know who made, neither does Sophie. The Sirens gave it to him, as well as the laptop later on in Eclipse. When it is twisted to the right, an orange LED signals its active use and is shut off when twisted to the left. It creates a gravitational upstream in its field, a 3 meter wide enveloping that is blue and pulsates orange rings every 3 seconds - surrounded by a membrane. Like a cell membrane, it is selectively permeable but it breaks only with enough force if a person does not have the Ayanami near them. The field, while pulling the user up towards its destination - as if they were flying - they are in a microgravity environment and hence, the user has limited mobility. It can also be used for cargo, as unlimited weight can be put on it theoretically. However, the user is still subject to oxygen loss. The title originated from Rei Ayanami, a prominent character in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
