Blood (Tentative Title) Part I
Someone was screaming.
Emilie sat up in bed. Outside her bedroom window the sky was blood red. No, not really blood red. Real blood is darker. Like, the time Eli slapped her across the face and blood trickled from her nose. That time, the blood was almost black. The sky was not the same color but it was the color everyone pretends blood to be. It was the color of the blood in the movies.
Hundreds of bats flew through the crimson clouds. She could hear them hitting her house and see them clinging to her windows.
Lightning flashed outside and as the sky cleared Emilie saw Eli’s face outside her window, laughing. As he opened his mouth to speak, Emilie was sure she saw fangs.
“Soon.” He said.
The screaming continued.
Emilie woke up from her nightmare in a cold sweat.
“Mommy!” Remi yelled from his bedroom.
Emilie got up and dashed down the hall, her robe dragging on the floor behind her. Remi was sitting in his bed breathing heavily, tears and sweat streamed down his face.
Emilie sat next to her son and held him. “What is it?” She asked. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I had a bad dream,” he said. “There were bats all over the house and…and…”
“What sweetie?”
“I thought I saw dad.”
Emilie kissed Remi on the forehead and whispered, “It’s only a nightmare. Daddy will never hurt you again. I promise.”
