The devil inside
I had Begged, And I pleaded with God for it to stop.
But this hellish nightmare continued
I don't know for how long.
butt it seems like it went on forever.
I watched as Robert writhed in agony and pain.
And, all I remember after that.
Is a man, slapping me in the face
Trying to revive me.
And I keep hearing him say
Mr. Barkley, can you hear me.
I say, yeah;----I can hear you;
He says--- good, Very good.
He was a tall man with dark hair.
his eyes were black and set far back in his head;
his face was long and slender.
with a thin mustache and goatee.
he was dressed in a white pristine suit.
He looks at me and says.
You have yourself in quite a mess don't you.?
it's going to take Constance a year to get this one cleaned up.
Did you get what you wanted.?
I say, what.?
He says.
Well:
That's all I've heard for two years.
you bitching and moaning about Robert Evans and how he killed your sister.
And you wanted to see him dead.
Did you get what you wanted.?
I looked at him. And I say,
are you fucking kidding me.
Not like this.!
The man in the suit looked at me with his head tilted to one side and says.
Why : I swear,
just no pleasing some people.
I watched, as the anger built in the Mans face, his eyes glowed red.
His face contorted.
The veins in his four head, neck and face stood out pulsating.
his voice changed to a deep growl.
And he says,
well what the fuck did you want.
Just to put a bullet in his head.
that's Real fucking creative.
He says.
I've watched the anger building.
In you, day, after day, year after year, I watched as it was in golfing you taking you over.
Now: Tell me that's not true.
Okay:
I admit it: I was angry-- very angry:
Just let me start from the beginning.
I had been looking for that son of a bitch for two years, every time I would get close that son of a bitch he would crawl into a hole and disappear.
And then one morning I finally caught a break, I had gotten a call from one of my informants on the street Who had needed some cash for a fix.
so I asked where he was.
he tells me.
I left my office,
I get in the car and I drive to the addressed.
and when I get here he was standing in the rain, holding an old news paper over his head,
outside of this rundown hotel.
I pull up to the curb where he was standing.
And I motion for him to get into the car.
Win He opened the door, to get in the car.
A pungent odor hit me in the face I thought to myself he has no concept of soap and water
He smelled as if he has been sleeping in a dumpster.
his hair was a dirty dish water-blonde.
it's was long, straggly and looks as it hasn't been combed his whole life.
He was shaking all over,
I didn't know if it was from the cold. And wet,
or from him needing a fix.
He says do you have my money.?
I just look at him and say.
do you have my information.?
He says yeah man I do.
Well: you going to give it to me or not.
He looks at me and says.
give me the money man and I'll give you the information.
I look at him and say.
Are you fucking kidding me.
when you go buy your shit, do they give you the shit first or do they take the money, and then, give your shit to you.
He looks at me and says.
I don't fucking know you from Adam man.
give me the fucking money or I'm gone.
I grabbed him by his filthy ass shirt.
and I said.
I swear to god.
if you fucking take this money.
and this information is no good.
I will fucking hunt you down.
do you understand me.
He says the info, good man.
I swear to God I seen him myself.
I know exactly where he is.
I pull the money from my pocket.
and I handed it to him.
where the fuck is he I say.
And he points to the building that were sitting in front of.
I ask him again.
are you sure,
you better not be fucking with me.
He just looks at me and says.
yeah man I'm sure.
he's been here for about three weeks.
He was all beat to fuck when you walk through the door.
Smiling.
I patted him on the shoulder I say.
good job, good fucking job.
He open the door and he gets out of the car
And walks off down the street to get his fix.
I sat there in the car outside of that dilapidated Hotel.
for I would:---- say,
probably, Twenty minutes or so.
staring at that gun I had in my glove compartment.
Then I reached in, and take that gun in my hand.
I'm just holding it, looking at it.
and then i leaned forward and I placed the gun inside my waist band behind me.
underneath my jacket.
Man in the white suit ask
so no one can see it?
Yeah.
I didn't want any one to see it
and stop me before I finish my task.
If: you know what I mean.
I Slowly open the door and I step out of my car and into the rain.
I walk through that rain to the front door of that hotel.
where that piece of shit was staying.
Well: let me ask you this.
did you come here to kill him.?
You fucking, right I did.
that Sonofabitch killed my sister.
You know what they say, an Eye for an eye.
Well: anyway
The rain was falling hard
when I walked into the lobby.
that thunder, seem to shake The whole damn place.
As I walked across the old wooden floor, to the front desk.
At first I didn't see anyone.
i thought that fucker had lied to me.
as I got closer to the desk
I see an old oriental man asleep.
in a old wooden swivel chair.
with his head tilted back, snoring. with drool running down one side of his Face.
I just stood there watching
The old man sleep.
The old man snorts twice, I watched him Flinging his arm around in front of his face, like a fly had landed on his nose. I couldn't believe he was still sleeping after that clap of thunder.
So I rang the little bell on the desk.
That old man jumps: like he had been shot. I couldn't figure that one out, the Thunder didn't wake him up but the little bell did. Go figure,
He jumps out of that chair he was wiping the drool from his face.
with both hands.
I almost laughed.
He looks at me and says.
"what- you -want?:
His customer service skills lacking something to be desired,
Well: I just looked at him and say
I'm looking for a friend of mine.
I understand, he's staying here. his name, is Robert Evans.
That old man looks at Me.
Like,
I had been rude for waking him up.
And he says.
"I -don't -know -name, -day give money --day get key."
I placed my arms on the counter and I leaned forward,
and I whisper,
what's your name old man.
I seen that in a Clint Eastwoodmovie once.
I was nose to nose with the old guy.
It was like, he seen something in my face, that makes him take two steps back.
and he answers:--- Wong.
I just look at him and say
listen: Mr Wong I have six reasons why you should answer my questions.
The old man just stood there.
staring at me.
as if he was frozen in time.
Oh hell, I wasn't trying to scare him or nothing.
I started to reach behind me.
all I was going to do was pull my wallet out of my back pocket.
and I guess he thought I was going for the gun.
mr Wong grabs my arm and says
dat my wife.
Win I turn Around I saw an
old woman.
I just stood there watching Her. make her way down the stairs.
she was caring an old dirty mop and a bucket of water.
The water was sloshing from side to side in that bucket.
she looked as tired and rundown
as that old building.
She was cussing, and complaining. she says,
them stupid sons of bitches.
they make a mess, and then expect me to clean it up.
I'm not doing it next time.
Win she reaches the bottom of the stairs.
she sat the bucket on the floor,
and lean that mop against the banister.
I guess
the old woman seen the gun.
Under my jacket.
when I was leaning over the desk talking to her husband.
I guess she thought I was going for the gun to.
She had quickened her pace as she makes her way to the front desk.
where me and her husband are talking.
A the old woman looking at me and said.
"What you want?" --"you want woom?."
And then the old man's demeanor changed, like he was glad I was there.
I thought It was Kind of odd.
when he grabbed my arm and says.
"Dis is wife her name Constance." "her mudder named her dat, cause her constantly bitching.
and then he lets out a cackle.
The old woman ignores her husbands joke from behind the desk.
She Never took her eyes off Me.
I just say.
No: I'm looking for a friend of mine. his name, is Robert Evans:
The old woman looked as if she was thinking: "I don't know name:" She says.
I looked at her and asked:
Are you sure? he's a big guy, about 6"1 or 6"2 about 200 pounds, dark hair, blue eyes, he would have been dressed really nice when he came in.
That was one thing about this son of a bitch, he's always dressed to the nines. every hair in place.
the nicest lather on his feet and expensive clothes.
a real ladykiller, and I mean that in every sense of the word.
The old woman thought for a moment:---- "yes I tink I know him."
"I amber when he came in."
"it look like he been in fight,"
And I thought to myself you fucking bet he had.
It had been one hell of a long day.
I thought I would stop in at Duffys and have a drink before I went home.
I was sitting at the bar nursing my drink, reading the newspaper.
When this kid walked up and sat down beside of me at the bar.
The bar tender walks over and ask him, watch ya have.
Just a beer he says.
The bar tender brings him his beer he takes a drink.
then he lights a cigarette.
then he looks at me and says can you hand me the ashtray.
I didn't even look up from the newspaper, I just handed it to him.
He just sat there for a few minutes.
kind of nervous and twitchy,
then he says.
I understand you're looking for Evans.
Once again not even looking up for my newspaper,
yeah:
what do you know about it?
He says well,
I know where he is right now.
I just looked at him say,
yeah, Where.?
He looks at me and says man nothings free.
I reached into my Jacket pocket and took out a 50.
He looks at me and says.
man is that all it's worth to you.?
So I reach back in and take out another 50.
and he takes it from my hand.
I say okay, you been paid.
now how about that information.
He says ok man
He's been hanging around this old abandoned meatpacking plant.
it's where all the kids go.
you know where I'm talking about.?
Yeah I do, that's where that girl was found the other day isn't it.
the dead one?
He says. yeah man that's the place.
I looked at him and asked.
he's there right now?
how long ago did you see him?
About 10 or 15 minutes ago he was there when I left.
I say.
Hey man. thanks for the information.
He finishes his beer, gets off the barstool.
walks toward the door and when he gets there he's holding to the door knob he turns toward me and says, get that son of a bitch.
and he walked out the door.
As I watch him leave
I say under my breath, I plan on it.
I walk to my car standing there with my hand on the handle I slip the Key in the lock of door I open it and get in.
And I'm thinking to myself,
I hope that son of a bitch is still there.
I get into my car and I start it, I put my hand on the gearshift and pull it into drive.
And as I leave the parking lot.
and get onto the highway
I listen to the tires as they turn down the highway a low pitch sound at first and then it gets higher, and higher, And an even higher pitch as the Motor Excelerat's going down the highway,
and as the headlights of the other cars passing me
They create a light and shadow
Effect over my face as they go bye.
I had my window rolled down.
the wind was blowing through my hair,
radios cranked up full blast to
Phil Collins's there's something in the air tonight.
the engine winds down as I pull up to the old packing plant,
I pull off of the highway
and onto the gravel parking lot,
the tires of the car make a crunching sound as I drive in slow and easy,
I turn off my headlights when I Drive up to the fence.
Win I shut the engine off everything got quiet, I open my door and I get out, and I'm walking slowly to the fence.
my boots make a crunch sound on the gravel under my weight
Win I walk up to the gate
I can hear music playing in the background.
I see a light from the window on the top floor of the old plant.
and I see shadows moving around inside the room.
I squeezed through the gate.
making my way over to where the light is.
as I walk the music is getting louder and louder.
And from under my breath I say.
I'm almost there you son of a bitch, almost there.
I make my way to the side of the old tin building I just stand there and listen.
I can hear a girl talking,
She saying come on dance with me.
I make my way up the concrete loading dock into the building, where they are, I see a metal stair case that leads to the upstairs it looks as if it was an office at one time.
I stand beside the stairs and I listen, I placed my foot on the first step and slowly start my climb hanging on to that cold steel Bannister as I make my way to the top of the stairs slow easy trying not to make a sound,
Win I reach the door at the top of the stairs I just stand there and watch.
He's Sitting in a chair with shoes off, feet propped up on a desk.
There was some empty beer bottles and a half full bottle of vodka sitting on the desk beside of him
She's dancing to the music.
she walks up to him and rubs his face with her hands.
And she says come on dance with me!
she's dancing around in her bare feet, she's wearing a black dress that her blond hair lays against in contrast she has a soft voice and a nice body.
I hear him say maybe later I don't want to dance right now!
I walked in slow and easy.
Reaching behind me taking out my gun.
walking over to the radio and turned it off.
You should've seen that son of a bitches face, that was worth a million bucks.
I say. okay you pieces shit
you ready to die.
He sets up putting his feet on the floor he looking at her I know what he's thinking if he can get to her, he has a shield.
and I can't let that happen.
He starts to walk toward her.
I say if you move I will blow your fucking head off !
Don't move mother fucker!!
I walked toward him with the gun in my head
I say, okay asshole turn around,
put your hands on the desk.
I swear to GOD!! if you flinch I'm gonna blow your fucking head off.
I pulled the cuffs out of my back pocket.
And I was just about to slap the cuff on him.
He Grabs a clipboard from off that desk hitting me in the face knocking me to the floor.
My gun slides across the floor and under an old Metal bookshelf.
I scrambled for the gun on my hands and knees he kicks me in the face, knock me do my back.
He picks up a pipe from off the floor I get to my feet he's flinging that pipe around it whizzes and whistles as it goes through the air i'm dodging and ducking
The blows,
I move one way than the other he slams that pipe down on the desk and he screeches, I'm going to fucking kill you!!
He comes at me again with the force of a bull he's breaking windows The beer bottles that set on the desk glass flying everywhere the steel pipe lands on the metal filing cabinet He has me backed against and it makes a loud thunderous sound that echoed through the old building.
I fall to the ground as if I had been struck, i'm lying on my back looking up into his face.
he has the pipe raised over his head
With this feet wide apart for balance,
Ready to deliver the final blow.
and I kicked him right between the legs.
He doubles over and falls onto the floor I crawled on top of that son of a bitch and I beat him I beat him with everything I had.
I beat him until the blood from his nose and his mouth,
I beat him for Cassie, I beat him for Carol Whit More, I beat him for Genie long, I beat him for Barbara Taylor. I beat him for his mom and dad.
I'm setting on top of him thinking I have your ass this time.
Win She walks up from behind me and I turn my head and look at her to say you're safe now,
and she hits me in the head with that damn pipe.
knocking me unconscious.
I guess they thought it had killed me they just left me there.
That was two weeks ago.
I heard that they had found her body the next morning in a dumpster,
I was there to help her, but she didn't know that, she thought
I was attacking her boyfriend.
kind of sad.
Chapter 2
The old oriental woman continued
"his jacket was Tor and blood was on shirt."
"and he had blood on face, I asked him if he need doctor."
"but he no answer me."
"He just looked at me and say."
"just woom dat all I want, just woom."
"I tell him how much, he pay and he get key, he went to woom."
I looked at the old woman.
And I pull my wallet from my back pocket.
And I removed six 100 Dollar bills..
And I ask her.
witch room.?
The old woman looks at the money.
and holds her hand out,
i look at her - and say--which room?
The woman quickly snatched the money from My hand.
The old woman whispers
"woom --20."
I turned and walked toward the stairs: I noticed my steps seeming to echo through the old building as I made my way to the staircase.
I placed one hand on the banister.
And I remember Constance:
warning Me. no trouble today Jack.
I just turned and looked at her.
Wondering how she how she knew my name I just say,
NO: Constance, no trouble today.
As I placed my foot on the first step, it creeks beneath my weight and with the creek of each step,
my heart beat, faster and faster.
When I had reached the top of the stairs.
I stop and stared down that long dark Hallway.
Win I see Robert
standing there in the hallway.
With some girl up against the wall
My heart was pounding.
I watched as Robert turns and slowly walks back into his room.
As I'm making my way down the hall way,
The girls perfume lingered in the air.
I recognize the sent.
Chanel, number five
Cassie's favorite.
And that was the only thing
I had left to remember Her bye.
was the scent of her perfume.
And some old pictures, of when she was a kid.
and the pictures on my phone.
but that cent reminded me of Her.
I remember like it was yesterday, watching her spray a cloud of perfume in front of her and walk through it.
I think She had learned that trick from mom.
I can remember making fun of her for doing stuff like that.
but She would just laugh,
And tell me to get out of her room.
We grew up in a small town
just North of Los Angeles,
my sister Cassandra Whom I had nickname Cassie.
from The very first day.
mom and dad brought her home from the hospital.
my mom and dad call her Cassandra and I kept calling her Cassie.
until it stuck,
pretty soon dad was calling her Cassie,
then mom,
And then all of her friends.
and now she's just Cassie.
I'm four years older than My little sister. I was her big brother.
her protector, her guardian, Cassie was a beautiful little girl.
But she grew into even a more beautiful young woman.
She had red hair and big beautiful brown eyes.
and the voice of an angel.
Except when she tried to sing.
that's one thing she couldn't do.
And all she had to do is look at the boys, and bat those big brown eyes,
And the boys would just be falling all over themselves.
After she finished college.
she got into politics.
and went to work for a senator.
And as for me.
I'm a ex police officer turned
private investigator.
For one of the largest law firms in New York, And now I'm looking for my sister killer.
and here I stand about to knock on his door.
When I knock, Robert open That door.
as if he had been expecting someone.
there i stood once again
face to face, With the man,
that killed my sister.

I can't explain it but: there just seem to be--a sudden stillness in the room.
Robert staring at the clock hanging on the wall:
you know: that kind of clock:
that was only right, twice a day
it was like he was waiting fore the damn thing to tick.
Now I know it, and you know it's Not going to tick.
But Robert keeps looking at that clock.
