Blood (Tentative Title) - Part 2
Emilie’s alarm went off for the fifth time. The blinding orange sun burned like a flame through the closed curtains. She snatched her cell phone off of the bedside table and stared at the screen which flashed 9:10.
“Shit!” she said, jumping up and dashing to the closet in search of clean pants. She found a pair of black yoga pants – only worn once this week – and knew they’d have to do for work.
She ran to Remi’s bed where he was still asleep. “Remi, time to get up,” she said, tossing away his Star Wars comforter. “We need to leave NOW.” Remi rolled over and groaned. “C’mon, kid! you were supposed to be at school ten minutes ago.” She picked him up, against his protests, to a sitting position.
Emilie pulled off his pajama pants and put on him a pair of blue jeans. He sat in his bed and wobbled, eyes still closed. He would have to wear his Darth Vader night shirt to school.
Emilie carried Remi to her car still asleep and buckled him in his car seat. Half way to school Remi woke up and started crying.
“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Emilie asked.
“I…I…I didn’t get any breakfast!” He wailed.
Emilie sighed and dug in her purse. She usually carried snacks with her for times like this. She took out a blueberry Pop-Tart and handed it back to him.
Emilie drove up to Summerland Preschool. The clock on her dashboard read 9:45. She rushed to unbuckle Remi from his seat. Taking out a Wet-Nap to wipe the blueberry off his mouth something caught her eye which caused her to pause.
“Remi?” She asked. “What happened to your neck?” She rubbed her fingers against two red scabs on the side of his neck.
“I don’t know,” said Remi, shrugging his shoulders.
“It looks like something bit you.”
“Oh. That’s right.” Remi said, “I think it was the bats.”
“Bats?”
“Yea, they kept waking me up last night.”
Emilie furrowed her eyebrows and looked again at the two small red dots on his neck. “That was a nightmare, Remi.” She said. “Let’s just get you to your class.”
