Adam and Rosie
In the trenches he knelt,
On the soft muddy ground.
His brothers in arms,
They made not a sound.
Together they waited
For their Captain’s command,
The word to move forward,
To cross No Man’s Land.
Against shells, against bullets,
They would make their advance.
They knew many would fall,
They would take that chance.
His thoughts turned to home
As the moment drew near.
He thought of the girl,
Whom his heart held so dear.
She tried to work harder,
Though she was tired.
The thought of her country
Kept her inspired.
The men had all gone,
All that were able,
Leaving the women
To put food on the table.
So they gave it their all,
And welded and riveted.
They did the impossible
Their strength was unlimited.
Though she was working,
Her thoughts turned away,
To a boy in the trenches,
Whom she wished was home today.
Though cross an ocean,
The man and his bride,
Their thoughts were the same,
And together they cried.
