Birth of a Super Hero - The Beginning
The Powers That Be
She can run faster than The Flash, fly faster than Supergirl and her hearing range can not only cover the world, but she can focus in on a single voice. She is indestructible. But her greatest super power is to turn into any person she likes.
But two days ago, she was just a normal woman, with normal needs. Now, she is about to embark on an adventure that will take her where no mere mortal could fathom.
How did she get this way in so short a time.
Let’s go back to the beginning how and where this all began.

Anna had just left a birthday party for one of her girlfriends, Alexis, and was driving home on Route 73. It was almost one in the morning and her house was a good thirty miles away. She had her radio on an FM station playing light rock and occasionally she would either sing or hum along. Anna was in a good mood and life was good. She just two days before had received a raise, and a two-dollar lottery ticket netted her $250. The only thing that could have made things better would be to have someone in her life she could love, but so far, there hadn’t been one man in the last five years, outside of Jimmy, who could make her world spin on a dime.
Sighing at the thought of Jimmy, who died in a plane crash after returning from San Francisco really turned her world inside out, but five years after he died, she was ready to jump in and take a chance again, but the men—ugh! Too bold, too brash, too arrogant, or too stupid. Or, all of the above and ….
Seven miles into her drive a bright silver light was coming toward her but not from the road. It was coming from—the sky!
Pulling off the road and stepping on the brakes, Anna wanted to make sure that whatever it was didn’t crash into her, but it didn’t matter. The light was still headed directly toward her. She decided stopping was stupid and hit the gas pedal hard and her car lurched forward and sped about all of sixty feet when she was hit directly by the force of the light. The last thing she remembered was, “I’m coming to you, Jimmy.”

She woke up in a white room. The first thing she could understand is that her arms and legs were strapped to a table and tubes seemed to be dangling in the air, tubes that were also attached to about fifty places on her body.
She tried to break free but couldn’t. She didn’t know where she was. She could only remember the ball of light surrounding her and then she went blank.
All of your questions will be answered in a moment. The retro-fit is taking place in your human body. Soon you will be somewhat back to normal but with changes.
My name is Axion, from Nimbus, the fifth planet outside your galaxy. My superiors have sent me on a mission to find and locate five species of race across the galaxies, twenty-seven of them to be accurate, and reinforce their minds and bodies with advance abilities. Once the retro-fit has completed, you will have abilities no human on your planet could ascertain.
My superiors have chartered me to look for what you humans call a hero. A savior. One who will protect the oppressed and challenge all that is evil by any means necessary.
You will run faster, crush any object, become indestructible, soar at great leaps and bounds and have perfect hearing as far away as you could imagine. Your eyesight will take in any person or object at any range once you focus. But the most important aspect of the retro-fit—you can change your appearance with a simple thought, and I will add, it is painless.
I chose you because of your ability to maintain friendships, be available for people without hesitation, and your emotional state tells me your mind is in order and your thinking, logical. You have suffered losses in your life. The passing of one you call Jimmy, and two people you call parents. Studying over eight billion people on this planet, and you are the choice above them all to take hold of this wisdom and power bestowed to you. Your integrity, your honesty, is far superior and that is why you are in my ship being retro-fitted.
Anna still couldn’t speak as she watched and listened to a faceless man who was speaking into her mind. If she could have found her voice, she would have screamed from his appearance alone, but the more he spoke, the more in awe she was with what changes were being made to her. She also wondered how long she had been like this.
Yes, once the retro-fit is complete, your restraints will be removed and then you will be free to move around as you like. Once you are, there is an outfit for you to wear lying across a chair behind me that is air-porous and conforms to your body, for lack of terms you may not understand, it will conform to your body like a second skin. and a pair of myrid boots, which is to say they conform to each step you make. They are also indestructible. And you have been approximately sixty-two minutes and eleven seconds of your earth time.
After studying you, you are also the logical course because you do something called work, thus giving you a separate identity. From this moment on, you will maintain a life of two people. One a diligent hard-working female, the other, the equivalent of a super hero as the term is called on your planet. You will right the wrongs and help bring harmony to people’s lives.
Just as those last words came into my head, a constant beeping sound went off.
Very good. You already are perceptible. That beeping you hear is on the top deck of this ship. You already have mastered the ability to pick up distant sounds. That beeping also means the retro-fit is complete.
Axion walked toward me and began to remove every tube attached to my body, and strangely enough, I felt nothing as he removed everything. Then he unlatched the restraints and I could finally move. When I sat up, that was when I noticed I was completely naked! I covered myself quickly.
You needn’t concern yourself. Your nudity is temporary. Just go to the chair and put on the clothing.
What a quirky guy. Most guys I knew would love to see me naked but that’s not all they would want. As I started dressing into a one-piece outfit, Axion jumped into my head, again.
I am not offended by your apparent concern I may take liberties. On Nimbus, rational thoughts are processed before any culmination of a body-to-body contact is initiated. We are a frugal and tempered-minded people.
How does the clothing feel to you.
Though I spoke out loud, I was actually beginning to like the mental-telepathy thing.
“Fits like a charm. So, Axion, is there a set of instructions or anything on exactly how to use all these powers I have?”
Instructions as in written ones, no. Your decisions are your instructions. Your actions are your instructions. When any crisis is caused, your decisions will determine what needs to be done.
“Okay, so, once I’m off this ship, I’m on my own, or are you going to stay and hang out with me?”
Hang. Rather odd word. Hang is when someone or some thing is dangling in the air. I prefer not to hang.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “That wasn’t what I meant. Hanging out means to stick around and do stuff together.”
I see. I cannot do that. I still have two other worlds to attend to find people like you to take care of the people and the planet.
“Well, that sucks. I thought maybe you could at least watch what I do when something happens and give me pointers.”
You already have pointers, you call them fingers. Use them if you need to point to something.
“That wasn’t what I … never mind. I get it.” Looking to my left, I saw a metal bar about two-inches thick standing against a wall. I walked over and picked it up. Felt like it weighed about five pounds and was about two feet long.
Go right ahead.
I did. Grabbing each end with my hands I began to curl the bar, easily enough, until it was in the shape of a horseshoe, and I never felt any strain at all!
I will now return you to where you were taken from, and no, your transportation has not suffered damage. Once you are safely back on the ground I will leave.
“Will I ever see you or hear from you again? I mean, you went to all this to turn me into a Supergirl aka Wonder Woman.”
I do not know who or what they are, but no, I will not return, but your actions will be monitored from Nimbus. If I do return, it only would be to find a suitable replacement in any event you are unable to perform your tasks awaiting you.
Walking to a mirror, I stared at myself. Long dark hair, green eyes, dimpled cheeks, wide smile. Looking down as I first did when I was naked, my body hadn’t physically changed that I could see. If nothing else, I could feel the energy running through me and my musculature felt stronger, tighter. I looked the same as I did before Axion whisked me away like a box of Calgon. Then Alexis face came to me and I looked into the mirror again. Long red fiery hair, emerald eyes, porcelain skin, with a smattering across both cheeks. I was her, or was she, me?
See, it is as I said. You can become whoever you wish when needed. Just a simple thought with a picture in your mind, you can transform into anyone.
“Or anything? What if I think a dog or cat or a parakeet? Do I go, poof, I’m a bird?”
You can if you will it, just as you have with the image you wear now. Come with me, it is time you departed, and I have places and people to attend.
I followed Axion to a hatch doorway that slid inward and when he pulled something similar to a mini-flashlight in his hand, he hit a button and a tractor-beam appeared from the open doorway to the ground below.
“I guess this is it, Axion. You know, I’m not even pissed that you took me without my consent and somehow, I am grateful you did. I promise you, I will do the very best I can. No one will get by me when there is any kind of danger. You have my word.”
I trust your word. Good life to you, Anna Gemstone.
As I started walking down the tractor-beam stairwell, I stopped and turned. “It just hit me. You going to other worlds. So there is other life out there?”
There are twenty-six planets in five galaxies that sustain life, some of which you may not consider human, but they are life forms.
“I’ll be damned.”
I turned back and continued walking and once my feet hit the ground, the beam disappeared, and I could hear a vibrating hum. Looking up from where I just left, I realized I couldn’t see his ship. It was invisible the whole time I was inside. I guess that’s one way to avoid the military and snooping neighbors.
And just that quickly, three lights hovered above me and shot straight up to the sky at blinding speed, and Axion was gone.
I looked at my surroundings and realized all this and much more would need my protection every bit as much as the people would. I was really liking the idea I could beat the crap out of bad guys and save the day for the good guys. This was going to be fun.
