A Weighty Problem
Scientists have quietly and alarmingly shown that most people who lose weight eventually gain it back, and it makes sense in fact that our bodies would get more efficient, able to operate on less and less sustenance in order to build fat stores and "survive" like our foraging ancestors. I honestly don't have specific timeframes or numbers to cite, because it is frustrating and disheartening to think that all of the hard work and stress and calorie counting could lead to being the old version of myself again one day. I'm grateful that scientists study this uncomfortable topic and write papers that I halfheartedly skim while cringing to myself. The nation loudly celebrates and enjoys spectacles like Biggest Loser, but quietly tries to forget how many of those people end up gaining the weight back. We all need hope and steps to take in order to make a sustained change. Genie, please help us solve the weight loss problem so that we can collectively stop becoming more obese every year.
