To Whom It May Concern,
This letter is for the family of Mr. Fernandez. If you are not apart of the family of Mr. Fernandez, please deliver it to them in Salem, Oregon.
Hello Family. It's been such a long time. It's scary here, gunshots can be heard in every direction, people screaming in pain, and being on constant call to defend has rattled me a bit. I know I said that I wasn't going to let the war get to me, but Mom... I'm really scared. Every night I can barely sleep, how could when at any second we could be ambushed? I can't go on like this, I can't keep fighting this war. We're losing. There's not much left here for us. Some of the guys in my unit are purposely giving themselves serious injuries so they can get sent home. Some are breaking their legs or others their arms. The atmosphere out here is too much to bear, all I smell is the blood of those weren't fortunate enough to get out of the crossfire. Walking around is already scary enough, but they've also layed out traps all over the place for us. Half the time when I'm running for my life I have to slow down to make sure that I'm not stepping on a landmine or whatever else they've thrown out here. I can't express how much I want to leave, but our captain says that we have to stand strong, not for ourselves, but for our families and country. My bunk members play cards everyday betting cigars and food rations, it's our only form of entertainment. The mood here is so dull and lifeless, there's not a soul here that thinks what we're doing is favorable. I don't want to stop writing to you, I don't ever want to stop writing to you, but if my captain finds me writing this he'd probably take it away and say something like, "You don't need to write letters! You'll see your family soon!" And so I'll end it here. Goodbye my beautiful family. Whether I see you or not in the future is unclear. But I want you all to know that I love you all so deeply. I wish that I could hold all of you in my arms one last time. Goodbye Family.
