Notes
Set/Audio:
This play takes place in a modern-day small town, mostly indoors. Costumes and makeup should be natural, except for the final scene, where it is fancier for the winter formal scene. All of the set can be made either out of chairs or can be mimed. However, there is a very important bridge scene, which can be made out of chairs with something covering them so that the audience cannot see behind it. Audio will be required for multiple parts (i.e. music for the dance, thunder sounds for the bridge scene, etc.)
Characters:
ROBIN - Robin is a 17-year-old nonbinary transmasculine person who uses they/them pronouns. They are a bit shy and once was popular but quickly became quite unpopular once they came out. Their family starts out very unsupportive but becomes much better eventually. Robin attempts suicide at the beginning of the play and is the main character but quickly learns to love themself once they meet Ezra and Hazel, their new best friends. By the end of the play, they are much happier and are a far stronger person.
EZRA - Ezra is a 17-year-old transgender male who is quite nerdy and unpopular. He is very, very openly gay and loves things with rainbows. His rough past is addressed toward the end of the play, and he has a very supportive family. He gets injured while saving Robin from attempting suicide and becomes Robin’s closest friend and ally by the end of the play.
HAZEL - Hazel is an 18-year-old lesbian and a devoted Catholic. Her family is very religious and conservative, not supportive of her identity at all. Her family is also physically and verbally abusive, but she doesn’t let it drag her down. She is also a very funny and unusual character, and she does not care what people think of her. By the end of the play, she starts dating Mia, a bisexual girl from the GSA at their high school. She is also one of Robin’s closest friends and supports.
KAYLA - Kayla is one of Robin’s childhood friends-turned-enemies who “disowned” them when they came out. She is very assertive and loves making fun of people for a reason not specified in this piece. She is extremely feminine and is cisgender and heterosexual. Her favorite things include makeup, hanging out with Lexie, and making Robin’s life miserable. By the end of the play, she starts to realize what she’s done but never fully changes in any way.
LEXIE - Lexie is Kayla’s right hand, another cisgender, heterosexual girl who could be considered a bit of a traditional “hipster.” She is also an extreme Catholic and conservative, constantly using her religion and the Bible to back up her homophobia and transphobia. She enjoys artistic stuff, hanging out with Kayla, and making Robin’s life miserable. By the end of the play, she still does not care about what she’s done to Robin, Ezra, or Hazel and continues in her homophobic, transphobic ways.
DAN - Dan is a man in his thirties or forties who works at the hospital in the psych ward. He is outwardly a funny person with a very distinct personality, but his past is honestly terrifying. He’s had more experience with suicide, self harm, substance abuse, abusive family/friends, and everything related to these topics than anyone Robin’s ever met. He is the best counselor that Robin meets, and he gives them some very solid advice, teaching them how to love themself and planting ideas in their head about staying alive.
TYLER - Tyler is asexual and aromantic, and he is a patient at the hospital with severe suicidal thoughts, a sleeping and eating disorder, and anxiety. He is mostly there for med management, and he is a kind boy that becomes a temporary friend for Robin.
EMMA - Emma is the other patient at the hospital. Her sexuality is never explained. She is at the hospital for self harm and a suicide attempt, but by the time Robin meets her, she is doing much better and is generally a happy person. She is very accepting toward the LGBTQ+ community.
TARA - Tara is an excited, bubbly therapist who is very liberal and loves kids. She also plants ideas in Robin’s head for the first time about a better life and friends. She’s educated on transgender topics and absolutely loves people. Her life has been mostly pretty easy-going, but she’s definitely still an excellent therapist at the hospital’s psych ward.
MINOR CHARACTER
MIA - Mia is Hazel’s soon-to-be girlfriend, a bisexual girl who is a nerd too and loves playing Dungeons and Dragons with Hazel, Robin, and Ezra. She flirts with Hazel and goes to the dance with her. Mostly, she just backs up Hazel with whatever she says. She’s good friends with them all but is most close with Hazel.
MINOR CHARACTER
MOTHER - Robin’s mother is never given a name, so there is a bit of freedom there since she is always referred to as MOTHER. At the beginning of the play, she does not get along with her husband or her child (Robin). She physically and verbally abused Robin when they came out but quickly learns her lesson. She struggles a lot with the name and pronouns but tries very hard to learn to love her husband and child. By the end of the play, she is very supportive and kind.
MINOR CHARACTER
FATHER - Robin’s father is also never given a name, so there is freedom there too, and he is always referred to as FATHER. At the beginning of the play, he does not get along with his wife or child and is honestly pretty absent as a parent. When Robin came out, he gave them “harsh looks” and left the house, barely coming back ever. However, by the end of the play, he quickly learns his lesson as well. He also struggles with the name and pronouns, but he tries his hardest as well.
