The Reason Small Talk Is Awkward
"So... how do you know Billy?"
"I work with his wife."
"Oh, cool."
"..."
"Where do you guys work?"
"NFH Insurance agency downtown. She went through orientation with me."
"Oh, wow. Lucky. It's cool you stayed friends."
"We're not really close, but our kids sometimes play together."
"..."
"How do you know them?"
"I'm their neighbor across the street."
"Hmm. I guess it was a short trip."
"Huh! Yeah. It was."
"..."
"..."
"Do you ever wonder whether life is really too short or too long? I feel like I have all these dreams and ambitions, but it's hard enough just getting through the work day and make it home in time for dinner."
"I know! I'm more inclined to believe that society is manipulating us to think that we're capable of so much more when in reality what we're doing now will most likely be what we do for the rest of our lives. It's morbid to think that at first, but I love the way I live my life."
"Seriously! Why am I not allowed to be satisfied with being able to come home to my family every night. Sure, it might be lame to binge watch Netflix with my wife until we fall asleep, but it's what makes us happy. Isn't more important to pursue contentment and belonging rather than forcing your opinions and half-hearted ambitions on the world?"
"I know, right?"
"Yeah."
"..."
"..."
"I'm going to go... check... check on my wife."
"K."
