Shreds of Heartache
That night you said goodbye
I slammed your car door shut
Walked up the driveway to my front door
Turned the handle
Pulled it open
Clicked it shut
As I stepped through that doorway
The world around me
Was engulfed in fire
The air thick with heavy black smoke
Stole the breath off my lips
I felt a sharp blow to my chest
Stunned by the pain
Paralyzed
My heart
It broke
It bled
It seized
It exploded
Pieces scattered everywhere
My eyes began to water
Slowly extinguishing the flames around me
Once the fire was out
I got on my hands and knees
Crawling on the ground
Sifting through the debri
I glued the shards of my heart together
But I was missing a piece
After searching high and low I climbed to my feet
Trembling I began to breathe
Not without consequence
With each deep breathe came a sharp pain
Like my heart exploding again
And again
Eventually my legs stopped trembling
But every breath without you still stung like venom in my lungs
The other day I saw the missing piece glistening in the sun
I glued it in the vacant space
Now I breath easy
