A Letter to the Next One
A letter to the next one:
Let me start out with an apology
For I think it’s only fair
that you know I’m delicate,
that I don’t fall easily
but I fall hard
That sometimes I cry
for reasons unknown--
like sun showers--
it doesn’t last long.
Let me apologize for not trusting
I’ve done that before
it didn’t end well
and I was left with only pieces
trying to stitch myself together
without a pattern or guide to help.
Let me apologize for any baggage
You may be great but
I might not be ready
That the last guy toyed with my heart
and left me fragile
unsure of how to move, breath, live.
Finally, let me revoke all of my apologies
I’m not sorry for my past
or how it’s shaped me.
If you want to be mine
you know this will happen
And I expect--no I demand--
that you love me still.
