These are mostly elemental carbon. In the late 1870s, the channel process of black carbon production was invented. This at first seemed to improve tyres but affected the environment. In recent times, black carbon is collected in the furnace process, which seems to be the best way by far.
The size and shape of these carbon particles affect different things in rubber like its strength, abrasion, conductivity, etc.

Nowadays, the tread compound of a tyre is made by combining carbon black with some other polymers. It is favourable because it enhances the life of a tyre and makes it more durable. Carbon also acts as a guard for the tyres from the UV rays which otherwise is responsible for early cracking of tyres.
