The Briefcase
Grandpa was a rather peculiar fella. He insisted that whenever we came to pay him a visit, we do not go down to the basement or his room. When we asked him why, he simply replied, ‘‘Because I said so. That’s why.’’
My siblings and I agreed to his words. We nodded our heads and soon got ready for bed.
We tried to fall asleep, but there was a strange static noise coming from— the basement. The first to sneak out of bed was Lucien.
I whispered, ‘‘Hey, get back to bed.’’ The moment he walked out into the corridor, I decided to tag along on this late night adventure.
My Grandpa was in the kitchen. I heard him clear his throat, I froze thinking that he had seen me in the hallway.
He bent down down and picked up his cane. Phew, that was a close call.
I quietly dashed past the kitchen and stopped when I was near the basement. The door to the room was slightly open.
Lucien must have been waiting in the shadows to scare me. This time I was not going to jump. I was prepared for his sneak attack.
I waited for a little while before opening the door. As soon as I opened it, I said, ‘‘Aha! Gotcha.’’
The room was empty. Except for a briefcase lying on the floor.
I approached it with caution. Then crouched down to take a peak. The minute my hand touched the case, something pulled me right in.
It felt like my body was being stretched, and pulled in all directions. When I finally came back to a normal state~ I landed on a pool table.
I screamed when I went spinning on the table after someone/something had hit the balls with the cue stick. This was such an odd place.
‘‘Watch it!’’ Did they not see me coming?
I brushed my sleeping pants and tried to be calm. It looked like I was part of their game.
Where was Lucien? I wanted to find him soon and leave the crazy game.
‘‘Look out!’’ A voice cried.
I was pushed to the ground. ‘‘Thanks.’’
I couldn’t help but hug my hero. He smiled and shook his head.
‘‘I’m sure glad to see you here.’’
Lucien looked around and sighed. ‘‘I feel like I’ve been here for hours.’’
‘‘Hmm. Any ideas of how we can escape?’’
I followed his lead. He ran to one end of the pool table and jumped into the hole.
‘‘Come on. Follow me.’’
Oh boy. Now he’s really lost his mind.
I didn’t argue. He may have found a way home.
Lucien was waiting for me by a door. He knocked on it and out came a lady dressed in what looked like a rose.
She bowed her head and chuckled. Her face and skin looked like a constellation. The collection of stars were shining and seemed to be moving-eh- I guess now I was the one going mad.
Lucien bowed his head and asked, ‘‘Can you please help us find our way back home?’’
She snapped her fingers & the ground started to tremble. I grabbed Lucien’s hand. He said, ‘‘This is the quickest way home.’’
I watched in terror as the ground opened up. A burst of gold light shot through beneath our feet.
In a few seconds the light surrounded us and I felt the bizarre sensation again. This time I felt like I was going to be sick.
In a short while, we were back in the basement. I looked for the briefcase. It was not in the room.
‘‘Where is the briefcase?’’
Lucien blinked his eyes and shrugged his shoulders. ‘‘I have no clue.’’

Grandpa woke up with a start. He got out of his bed. Then checked underneath it. He rubbed his eyes. It was right where he left it. He surely did not want his grandkids, or any other person, getting stuck in another world/universe.
