Reaserch on helplessness is fascinating. Researchers woud put dogs into shuttle boxes, (long crage-like structures that the dog can move around in.) and would shock the dog through one side of the floor, and the dog could easily evade the shocks by moving to the other side. Eventually, the researchers would put a wall between the sides, and put the dog on the shocking side, and with a lot of trials, and extended durations of shocking, the wall would be removed. The dog would stay where it was, and recieve shocks.

This explains terrible situations that people refuse to get out of.
