Empathy
Make your readers care about your characters. It’s a piece of advice you hear a lot in the writing world. Strange, isn’t it, that invoking empathy is a marketable skill?
Anyway, try to make us connect with a character in one short paragraph.
The Old Manor House
She buried her mother behind that dark decaying building full of secrets and lies. Not her real mother, but the only one she ever had. The only person she ever loved.
She stood and wiped the dirt from her hands. She would never hear the melody of her mother’s ever-present laugh again. The silence cut through her.
If only she'd arrived home an hour earlier. If she'd never left… She smothered those thoughts before they overwhelmed her.
She slung her sword across her back and set out. She would make them pay. Every last one of them. She would hunt them down and take everything from them, the way they took everything from her.
